We learned that America stood for many things, all of them right and true. We were taught that the values Americans cherish encompassed many things, but in essence were based on various individual freedoms, equality, and justice. I learned that all of these values had their basis in the strong democracy formed by the founding fathers of this country. We also were taught that freedom of speech is a primary underpinning of our democracy and that those serving in government carry out their responsibilities based on the informed consent of the governed.

“Political Activism and Policy Change: Leading From a Position of Conscience”
The second presentation in the Francis X. Cheney Lectureship in Religion and Society at Franklin Pierce College was given by Nobel Laureate, Jody Williams, on Monday, February 2, 2004.
Ms. Williams is the founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and joint recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.
Ms. Williams shared her views on Democracy with an overflow audience of students and faculty from Franklin Pierce College, members of the Monadnock Region and the media.
“Anybody from any walk of life can make a difference in the world today."
Students asked poignant questions...
...and made heartfelt observations.
“Democracy needs citizens to fight for what it says it stands for.”
“It is the right and responsibility of each and every one of us to create the world we want to live in.”
“Democracy is strengthened by debate – it’s about letting the other person speak. You don’t have to love the other guy but you must accept his right to live with dignity.”

JODY WILLIAMS TELLS UVM GRADUATES TO BUILD MEANING INTO EVERY DAY
by Lee Griffin Celebration of the University of Vermont's 194th Commencement ceremony began with joyous shouts, whistles, bagpipe music and a standing ovation, as alumna and Nobel Peace laureate Jody Williams and the platform party entered the indoor tennis facility at Patrick Gym this morning. The rain which forced the ceremony indoors did not dampen the spirits of the graduates and their families, some of whom watched the ceremony on a large projection screen in the adjoining gym. Graduates, families, friends and faculty were welcomed and congratulated by Frank Bolden, chair of the UVM Board of Trustees and an alumnus; Jody Luster, president of the class of 1998; and Judith Ramaley, UVM president. Bolden told the students they were "part of the UVM family. And family, like learning, is forever." His admission that "yes, we will hit you up" for a contribution brought laughter. But, more important than money, he said, would be UVM's pride in welcoming back some of them one day to honor their contributions to the world community. Ramaley introduced Williams as "a maverick, a risk-taker and a true Vermonter." The Commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree then bowed to the audience and hugged the sign-language interpreter. She asked her parents to stand, because "it took 26 years for them to see me in robes." Williams did not attend her UVM graduation ceremony in 1972.

by Mary Armstrong blues "I'm a long way from being a millionaire, but my memories are worth millions!" says Jody Williams. "Folks can see I'm having a good time. I hope that'll rub off on the young players." This is a whole new philosophy for Williams, but it took him 30 years to get there. In the '50s and '60s he was a fixture on the Chicago blues scene. As a member of Bo Diddley's band and a session musician for Chess Records, Williams' distinctive guitar style helped make hits of many Chess releases. But he found he was spending more time in court than in the clubs, trying to get his due. Frustration mounted. He made up his mind: "I'm gonna leave this [music] alone 'fore I end up killin' somebody." He slid the guitar under the bed and went back to school for electronics. After 26 years with Xerox, Williams took early retirement and started looking around for another line of work. "One day I listened to some tapes of my band from 1964. I didn't remember that we sounded that good," he chuckles. He took the guitar from under the bed and started loosening up his chops. "When I got back up on stage the spirit came right back over me!" His first recording in three decades

International Herald Tribune
I t is a cruel irony that countries around the world that suffer from some of the highest rates of poverty, disease, corruption, violent conflict and human rights troubles are also - at least on paper - some of the richest. Paradoxically, their wealth in natural resources like oil, natural gas, gold, diamonds and copper, has helped fuel many of their problems. Economists call this phenomenon the "resource curse" or the "paradox of plenty" and have struggled for years to come up with ways to deal with it. Now after much study and analysis, the World Bank, the world's most important poverty-reduction institution, has perhaps the best opportunity ever to help poor countries break out of this trap. But for this to happen, its board of directors and its president, James Wolfensohn, must exert the leadership necessary to assure that the earth's riches help the world's poor. Some countries have been able to convert their natural wealth into improved standards of living for their citizens. But in the vast majority of cases, this has not happened. The money generated from natural resources has helped perpetuate civil wars, as in Sierra Leone and Angola, or has been squandered by corrupt government officials - perhaps most spectacularly in Nigeria, which lost which lost an estimated $4 billion in government funds, 90 percent derived from oil, during the dictatorship of Sani Abachi in the 1990s.
