THE NOBEL FOUNDATION
Nobel Lecture
by Betty Williams
Nobel Peace Prize 1976 December 11, 1977 at Oslo City Hall, Oslo, Norway I stand here today with a sense of humility, a sense of history, and a sense of honour. I also stand here in the name of courage to give name to a challenge. I feel humble in officially receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, because so many people have been involved in the campaign that drew such attention to our leadership that an award like this could justifiably be made. Mairead Corrigan and I may take some satisfaction with us all the days of our lives that we did make that initial call, a call which unlocked the massive desire for peace within the hearts of the Northern Irish people, and as we so soon discovered, in the hearts of people around the world not least in Norway, the generosity of whose people to our cause is the main reason for our current ability to expand our campaign. But unlocking the desire for peace would never have been enough. All the energy, all the determination to express an overwhelming demand for an end to the sickening cycle of useless violence would have reverberated briefly and despairingly among the people, as had happened so many times before if we had not organised ourselves to use that energy and that determination positively, once and for all. So in that first week Mairead Corrigan, Ciaran McKeown and I founded the Movement of the Peace People, in order to give real leadership and direction to the desire which we were certain was there, deep within the hearts of the vast majority of the people, and deep even within the hearts of those who felt, perhaps still do, feel obliged, to oppose us in public.

Betty Williams Says Protect The Innocents
Peace prize winner: Protect the innocents
By Nicole Sterghos Brochu
Sun-Sentinel
September 16, 2001
WEST PALM BEACH When Betty Williams learned of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, her first reaction was, "Nuke 'em!"
And this from a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
"I'm not going to lie to you and tell you I haven't been feeling very violent this week," Williams told about 200 South Florida high school students gathered for an annual student council meeting in West Palm Beach on Saturday.
Williams, who won the 1976 peace prize for efforts to end strife in Northern Ireland, said it was natural, even human, to want to avenge Tuesday's devastating bloodshed. Even so, she said, America must avoid meting out punishment that may harm innocent people.
"We have to remember that when the first bomb is dropped [in retaliation], there will be young people like you underneath it. Innocents," she said, her voice thick with an Irish brogue.
"There has to be a reaction to this. There's no way around it. Let's hope we respond in a way that will not perpetrate on others what we have suffered."

71. Buttonwood Farm Betty Williams
You are entering Buttonwood Farm Winery and our sweet corner of cyber heaven.
http://www.buttonwoodwinery.com/betty.html
On November 30th, 2003 Buttonwood's founder, Betty Williams, turned eighty-five years old. We thought we would slightly part the veil of privacy that Betty lives behind and give you a glimpse of this wonderful woman. On a recent visit to Buttonwood Farm, you might have seen her walking through the fields adjacent to the tasting room. She's a striking figure: tall and straight, hat on head, walking stick in hand. Or perhaps you've exchanged a word or two with her as she works her magic with flowers and greenery in the tasting room. Then again, maybe you've never caught a glimpse or stopped to chat with her at all. But if you've been to Buttonwood, you've certainly felt her presence because Buttonwood is very much Betty Williams' home and represents the fulfillment of her lifelong pursuits and dreams.
Although it's a comfortable fit, Buttonwood hasn't always been Betty's home. If you detect the remnants of a drawl in her voice, you’re sensing her Louisiana heritage. Betty's youthful days were flavored with a Southern pace of life, local politics dominated by Huey Long, and two strong individuals as parents. Miss Delphine, Betty's mother, was a creative and enterprising woman. Her creativity found expression through gardening, gourmet cooking (see "Miss Delphine's Cook Book" in our tasting room), interior design, renovating buildings in the Audubon District of New Orleans, and being a consummate hostess. Betty's father encouraged her to think for herself and never questioned the idea that her achievements wouldn't match her abilities. He also stressed the importance of social and environmental responsibility and supported her participation in the family business.

Los Angeles, California Betty Smith Williams learned from her mother that she could make a difference by becoming actively involved. When Betty was growing up in South Bend, Ind., her mother was always active in social and civic organizations. "I saw very early on how activism and collectivism could impact change," she said. This early example inspired Betty to lead a life of involvement. In the late sixties, she cofounded the Council of Black Nurses in Los Angeles, and later became a founder and seventh president of the National Black Nurses Association. Today she is president of the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, which addresses cultural diversity in the nursing profession and the health care status of Americans from diverse cultures. In 1957, Betty began her nursing journey in home health care and later in public health, before becoming a professor at UCLA, University of Colorado and California State University. "Because of my age and the times, I was by myself in a lot of things. I was the first black person to wear the cap of Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western University. And I was the first black person to teach nursing in a California college or university," she said. That's why one of Betty's driving forces has been to promote racial diversity and to get African Americans involved in nursing leadership. She is a role model and mentor for nurses globally. "What satisfies me most is that through my work, and the work of my peers, we have stimulated others to find avenues in nursing," said the avid African art collector.
