The People of Genetics Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins Maurice Wilkins, the British biophysicist who contributed to determining the structure of the nucleic acid DNA, was born at Pongaroa, New Zealand on December 15, 1916. At age six, he went to England to attend school at King Edward's School, Birmingham. Wilkins studied physics at St. John's College, Cambridge and received his degree in 1938. He then went to Birmingham University where he was accepted as a research assistant. In 1940 Wilkins obtained his Ph. D. from the same university. His thesis was on the study of thermal stability of trapped electrons in phosphors. He worked to improve cathode-ray tube screens for radar during the war and under Professor M. L. E. Oliphant studied the separation of uranium isotopes in bombs. Wilkins moved with the rest of the research group from Birmingham to the official site of the Manhattan Project in Berkeley, California. Maurice Wilkins - DNA enabler As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the discovery of the structure of DNA, the Royal Society of New Zealand, in association with the NZ Portrait Gallery, commissioned a portrait of Maurice Wilkins (thanks to several contributors who are listed below) by one of our leading artists, Ms Juliet Kac. It also commissioned a poem by New Zealand poet Chris Orsman, which was read by Kiwi author Emily Perkins at the unveiling of the portrait of Maurice Wilkins in London this past November.
Living in Paradise
The family moved from Pongaroa to Wellington when Wilkins was still a baby, living at 30 Kelburn Parade. Wilkins has said these years were like "living in paradise". He believes passionately that he is a New Zealander, saying his years in Wellington were the happiest of his life. Wilkins firmly believes the opportunities for exploration and discovery in New Zealand helped his later development as a scientist: "In the time of my parents, before World War One, most people who came to New Zealand from Europe were the more enterprising people; the people who were stronger mentally. It takes a certain amount of imagination to make a life on the other side of the world, the same imagination it takes to climb the tallest mountain."
Student of John Randall
With the start of the Second World War, Wilkins began work for the Ministry of Home Security and Aircraft production. His research centered on radar development under John Randall at the University of Birmingham.

December 15 October 5 ) was a New Zealand born physicist and Nobel Laureate who contributed research in the fields of phosphorescence radar isotope separation , and X-ray diffraction . He was most widely known for his work leading to the discovery of the structure of DNA , a molecule which stores genetic information.
Life and Career
Wilkins was born in Pongaroa , north Wairarapa , New Zealand where his father was a medical doctor. His family moved to England when he was six. He studied physics at Cambridge , then in he received his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Birmingham with a dissertation on phosphors. During World War II he developed improved radar screens at Birmingham, then worked on isotope separation at the Manhattan Project at the University of California, Berkeley for two years before returning to X-ray diffraction work on DNA that had been obtained from calf thymus by the Swiss scientist Rudolf Signer. Using this sample Wilkins and his graduate student Raymond Gosling in 1950 obtained the first X-ray photographs of DNA that showed that the long, thin molecule had a regular, crystalline form. It was one of these photographs, shown at a meeting in Naples a year later, that sparked

About the scientists: Wilkins Maurice Wilkins
Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins was born at Pongaroa, New Zealand, on 15 December 1916. At the age of 6, Wilkins was brought to England and educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. He studied physics at St John's College, Cambridge , taking his degree in 1938. He then went to Birmingham University , where he became research assistant studying the luminescence of solids. He obtained a PhD in 1940 , his thesis being mainly on a study of thermal stability of trapped electrons in phosphors, and on the theory of phosphorescence , in terms of electron traps with continuous distribution of trap depths. He then applied these ideas to various war-time problems such as improvement of cathode-ray tube screens for radar. Next he worked on mass spectrograph separation of uranium isotopes for use in bombs and, shortly after, moved on to the Manhattan Project in Berkeley, California, where these studies continued.

Wilkins became Assistant Director of the Medical Research Council Unit in 1950 and Deputy Director in 1955. A sub-department of Biophysics was formed in King's College, and he was made Honorary Lecturer in it. In 1961 a full Department of Biophysics was established.
He was elected F.R.S. in 1959, given the Albert Lasker Award (jointly with Watson and Crick) by the American Public Health Association in 1960, and made Companion of the British Empire in 1962.
He married Patricia Ann Chidgey in 1959; they have a daughter Sarah and a son George. He finds his recreations in his collection of sculptures and in gardening.
