Elie Wiesel
By Shira Schoenberg Elie (Eliezer) Wiesel is a novelist, journalist and Nobel Prize winner. He was born an Orthodox Jew in Rumania, survived the concentration camps and wrote about his experiences. He became a spokesman for survivors and dedicated his life to recording the horrors of the Holocaust and helping victims of oppression and racism. Wiesel was born in Sighet, a Rumanian shtetl , on September 30, 1928. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah, were Orthodox Jews who owned a grocery store. He had two older sisters, Hilda and Bea, and a younger sister, Tsiporah. When he was three years old, Wiesel began attending a Jewish school where he learned Hebrew Bible , and eventually Talmud . His thinking was influenced by his maternal grandfather who was a prominent Hasid . He also spent time talking with Moshe, a caretaker in his synagogue who told Wiesel about the Messiah and other mysteries of Judaism In 1940, the

Sept. 30, 1928, Sighet, Romania), Romanian-born American novelist whose works provide a sober yet passionate testament of the destruction of European Jewry during World War II. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1986. Wiesel's early life, spent in a small Hasidic community in the town of Sighet, was a rather hermetic existence of prayer and contemplation and was barely touched by the war. But in 1944 all the Jews of the town (annexed by Hungary in 1940), including Wiesel and the other members of his family, were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz, where his mother and younger sister were killed. He was then sent as a slave labourer to Buchenwald, where his father was killed. After the war he settled in France, studied at the Sorbonne (1948-51), and wrote for French and Israeli newspapers. Wiesel went to the United States in 1956 and was naturalized in 1963. He was a professor at City College of New York (1972-76) and from 1976 was a professor of humanities at Boston University. Compare and Contrast Literature Guide - Night Wiesel, Elie Published 1956 I Introduction With the encouragement of Francois Mauriac, Elie Wiesel broke his silence on the horror of the Holocaust to produce an 800-page memoir entitled, Un di Velt Hot Geshvign, in 1956. That cathartic story was reworked over two years and became the slim 1958 novella La Nuit which became Night in 1960. Wiesel's novel revealed the Holocaust in stark, evocative, detail. He had a hard time finding an audience, however, in a world that preferred the 1947 Diary of a Young Girl written by Anne Frank. Night made no claim on innocence but created an aesthetics of the Holocaust to force people to face the horrible event and, hopefully, break the general silence surrounding that Hell. For Wiesel, Night began a brilliant writing career. ... Order Night Order other books by Wiesel, Elie
