Wilhelm Wien The Raisin Pudding Model of the Atom (Wilhelm Wien) By 1898 Wilhelm Wien was able to show that canal rays could be deflected by both magnetic and electric fields, as would be expected for particles that carry an electric charge. They were deflected, however, in the direction expected for positively charged particles. These observations can be explained by assuming that the atoms or molecules in the gas in a cathode-ray tube lose one or more electrons when excited by the voltage applied to the electrodes of the tube. The negatively charged electrons flow toward the anode. The positive ions formed when the atoms or molecules lose electrons flow in the opposite direction. The charge-to-mass ratio for the cathode rays is always the same because they consist of negatively charged electrons. The charge-to-mass ratio for the positively charged canal rays depends on the gas used to fill the tube because the nature of the ions produced when the atoms or molecules lose electrons depends on the identity of the gas. Abstract
Canal rays ("Kanalstrahlen" in German), or positive rays, played an important role in the development of physics in the early years of this century. However, their role has generally been neglected by historians of science. Canal rays, not widely known today, were discovered when a perforated cathode was used in a gas discharge. They are emitted from the holes into the space on the backside of the cathode.

Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Haidinger , (or Wilhelm von Haidinger February 5 March 19 ), was an Austrian mineralogist geologist and physicist He was born at Vienna ; his father, Karl Haidinger , contributed largely to the development of mineralogical science in the latter half of the 18th century. Having studied at the normal school of St Anne, and attended classes at the university, Wilhelm, at the age of seventeen, joined Professor F Mohs at Graz , and five years later accompanied the professor to Freiberg on the transfer of his labours to the mining academy of that town. In Haidinger visited France and England with Count Breunner , and, journeying northward, took up his abode in Edinburgh . He translated into English, with additions of his own, Mohs's GrundriŸ der Mineralogie , published at Edinburgh in three volumes under the title Treatise on Mineralogy (1825). After a tour in northern Europe, including the Scandinavian mining districts, he undertook the scientific direction of the porcelain works at Elbogen , belonging to his brothers.
