Bethe lecturer to discuss matter at lowest temperature in universe
Carl E. Wieman, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in physics, will discuss a new form of matter that occurs at record cold temperatures in a nontechnical talk on campus, Oct. 9. The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be given at 7:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium of Rockefeller Hall. Wieman, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, will be presenting the second of his two Bethe Lectures at Cornell. Wieman's talk, "Bose-Einstein Condensation: Quantum Weirdness at the Lowest Temperature in the Universe," will discuss a new form of matter predicted in 1924 by Albert Einstein, after work by Satyendra Nath Bose. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) results when atoms at extremely low temperatures lose their separate identities and meld into a single "superatom." Wieman and his collaborators created the first condensate in a gas by cooling rubidium atoms to the unprecedented temperature of less than 100 billionths of a degree above absolute zero in 1995. This discovery created an entirely new branch of atomic physics and has led to new inventions such as atom lasers and better atomic clocks. The other lecture by Wieman in the Bethe series will be a discussion of BEC in a physics colloquium, not open to the public, on Oct. 7 at 4:30 p.m., also in Schwartz Auditorium.

While at the College she helped organize the founding of the Federation of American Scientists in 1945. During World War II she taught at the University of Minnesota, returning to Brooklyn College after the war. She was fired from the college in 1952 for refusing to testify before the McCarran internal security subcommittee during the McCarthy era. Brooklyn College publicly apologized in 1987. Phillips returned to teaching in 1957, when she became associate director of a teacher-training institute at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1962 she took a position at the University of Chicago. She retired from the University in 1972. (Adapted from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia

I was born on March 26, 1951 in the small town of Corvallis, Oregon. A number of years earlier my newly wed parents N. Orr and Alison Wieman, like somewhat belated pioneers, had driven their decrepit car across the country to settle deep in the forests of the Oregon coastal range. My father began working in the lumber industry and during most of my childhood he worked as a sawyer in a sawmill. I was the fourth of five children. Most of my childhood was spent in the woods of Oregon where lumber was the sole industry. Probably some of my spirit of independence came from growing up far from other houses and towns. The nearest tiny store was always many miles away over unpaved mountain roads. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the long school bus rides that my siblings and I used to take over those winding roads to go to school. Much of my youth was spent wandering around in the forests of towering Douglas fir trees. I also spend much of my time reading and picking fruit and fir cones to earn spending money. Every Saturday my family would make a long expedition to the nearest town to do the week's worth of shopping. A stop at the public library was always part of these trips. Although I was unaware of it at the time, my parents must have made special arrangements for their children to use the library since we lived far outside the region it was supposed to serve. The librarians would also overlook the normal five-book limit and allow me to check out a large pile of books each week that I would then eagerly devour. That experience has left me with a profound appreciation for the value of public libraries. At the time I was quite envious that my friends had televisions while we did not, but in retrospect I am very grateful that I spent this time reading instead of watching TV.
