Heinrich Wieland, 1928 Historia-Photo (b. June 4, 1877, Pforzheim, Ger.d. Aug. 5, 1957, Munich, W.Ger.), German chemist, winner of the 1927 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his determination of the molecular structure of bile acids. Wieland obtained his doctorate at the University of Munich in 1901 and remained in that city to teach and conduct research. He became professor of chemistry at the University of Munich in 1925 and held that post until his retirement in 1950. Wieland made important contributions to structural organic chemistry with his findings (1911) that different forms of nitrogen in organic compounds can be detected and distinguished from one another. The following year he began his research on bile acids, which are produced by the liver. He found that the three acids he had isolated were steroids of similar structure that were related to cholesterol. His later work led him to believe that oxidation in living tissues is a matter of removing hydrogen atoms (dehydrogenation) and not of adding oxygen. This theory proved of great importance to physiology, biochemistry, and medicine.

Wieland was born in Pforzheim in the Black Forest and attended several universities. He spent most of his career at the University and Technische Hochschule of Munich. During World War I he researched into chemical warfare.
In 1912 Wieland showed that bile acids have similar structures to that of cholesterol. Later he worked out what he thought was the basic skeleton of a steroid molecule (for which he was awarded the Nobel prize), but it was found to be incorrect. In 1932 he and his co-workers produced a somewhat modified structure, which is still accepted today.
Wieland did other work with the bile acids, demonstrating their role in converting fats into water-soluble cholic acids (a key process in digestion). He determined the structures of, and synthesized many, toadstool poisons, such as phalloidine from the deadly Amanita fungus. He also began research into the composition and synthesis of pterins, the pigments that give the colour to butterflies' wings.
Wieland proved experimentally that biological oxidation (the process within living tissues by which food substances such as glucose are converted to carbon dioxide and energy) was in fact a catalytic dehydrogenation. This was in direct opposition to the findings of

He studied chemistry at the Munich University, where he received his doctorate in 1901. In Munich, he held a chair for chemistry until his retirement in 1952. His work, published in more than 400 manuscripts, delivered highly important contributions to the structural organic chemistry and biochemistry. One of his major interests was the investigation on bile acids and related compounds, for which studies he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1927. Moreover, he received further awards, e.g. the Goethe Medal for art and science as well as the Otto Hahn Prize of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh).
Prof. Heinrich Otto Wieland and his brother Prof. Hermann Wieland, a pharmacologist, were cousins of Helene Boehringer, the wife of

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Heinrich Otto Wieland The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1927 Heinrich Otto Wieland was born as the son of Wurttemberger parents, Dr. Theodor Wieland and Elise Blom, on June 4, 1877, in Pforzhelm where his father was a pharmaceutical chemist. He studied at the Universities of Munich, Berlin and Stuttgart, and then returned to the Baeyer Laboratory in Munich where, in 1901, he received his doctorate under Johannes Thiele. For several decades Wieland's attention was claimed by the organic nitrogenous compounds. His brilliant studies of the reaction of nitrogen oxides and orefins and aromatics, the clarification of furoxanes as well as the classical experiments with fulminic acid and its polymerization may be chosen as examples. In the same connection, Wieland succeeded in the first production of stable organic nitrogen radicals, of diphenyl nitrogen and its N-oxide. The proof of short-lived radicals in solution reactions involved him in an extensive series of experiments whose importance for the modern development of organic radical chemistry can hardly be overestimated. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1927 "for his investigations of the constitution of the bile acids and related substances".

He won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into the bile acids . In 1917 he succeeded Adolf von Baeyer as Chemistry Professor at the University of Munich Wieland tried successfully to protect people which were "racicaly burdened" after the Nuremberg Laws especially jewisch students. Students who were expelled because they were "racicaly burdened", could stay in the group of Heinrich Wieland as laborants or as "Gäste des Geheimrats" (guests of the privy councillor). After collecting money for the widow of Kurt Huber Clara Huber, Hans Leipelt a student of Heinrich Wieland was sentenced to death.
