Descendiente de una familia de colonos británicos instalada en Australia desde 1826, realizó sus estudios en el Cheltenham College y en el King's College de Cambridge, e hizo estancias alternativas en aquel continente y en Gran Bretaña. En la II Guerra Mundial combatió en la fuerza aérea británica en Oriente Medio y Grecia y, al final de la contienda, se estableció de forma definitiva en Australia. Para la escena escribió sucesivamente El funeral del jamón (1947), Tiempo en Zarzaparrilla (1961), Noche en Montaña Pelada (1962), Un alma alegre (1962) y Bosque abajo (1983). Como novelista ha publicado Valle feliz (1939), que le dio a conocer, La vida y la muerte (1941), La historia de la tía (1948), El árbol del hombre (1955), Voss (1957), Caballeros en la carroza (1961), Los abrasados (1964), Cuatro juegos (1965), El sólido Mandala (1966), El vivisector (1970), Los ojos de la tormenta (1973) y El caso Twyborn (1979). En 1973 le fue concedido el premio Nobel de Literatura por «haber sido el primero en darle al continente australiano una auténtica voz que se oye en todo el mundo», con lo que se hacía acceder al escritor al puesto honroso de ser el primer escritor de esa nacionalidad en conseguir el codiciado galardón.
