Ellen White and Adventists in the 1990s
by Arthur Patrick, La Sierra University
ABSTRACT: Ellen White’s spiritual giftedness was the most creative influence within the first seventy years of Sabbatarian Adventism. However, Seventh-day Adventists are still processing the implications of research undertaken since 1970, and significant recent events demonstrate that the church is in grave peril of misusing Ellen White by making her into a major barrier against constructive change in its Bible study, education, structure, worship, and mission. Therefore, we need to grasp our present opportunity to interpret Ellen White’s ministry in the light of all the known evidence. Why, near the dawn of the 21st Century, when the Seventh-day Adventist Church has grown to a worldwide communion of ten million persons, do audiences assemble in sophisticated North America to discuss a diminutive woman, who was born in a Maine farmhouse during 1827, and died in Northern California way back in 1915? For the same reasons that articles, papers, theses, dissertations, and books continue to discuss Ellen Gould White. Her writings are highly important for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and they are consistently used in a constructive way by many Adventists. However, in the 1990s many Adventists seriously misunderstand, greatly misuse, constantly neglect, or openly reject Ellen White’s writings.

    White, Patrick
In fact I enjoyed every minute of my life at King's, especially the discovery of French and German literature. Each vacation I visited either France or Germany to improve my languages. I wrote fitfully, bad plays, worse poetry. Then, after taking my degree, the decision had to be made: what to do? It was embarrassing to announce that I meant to stay in London and become a writer when I had next to nothing to show. To my surprise, my bewildered father, who read little beyond newspapers and stud-books, and to whom I could never say a word if we found ourselves stranded alone in a room, agreed to let me have a small allowance on which to live while trying to write.
This exhilarating personal situation was somewhat spoilt by the outbreak of war. During the early, comparatively uneventful months I hovered between London and New York writing too hurriedly a second novel, The Living and the Dead. In 1940 I was commissioned as an air force intelligence officer in spite of complete ignorance of what I was supposed to do. After a few hair-raising weeks amongst the RAF greats at Fighter Command I was sent zigzagging from Greenland to the Azores in a Liverpool cargo boat with a gaggle of equally raw intelligence officers, till finally we landed on the Gold Coast, to be flown by exotic stages to Cairo, in an aeroplane out of Jules Verne.

WHITE, Patrick. Thirteen poems [Sydney : 1930]
This book is one of the great rarities of Australian literature and the copy in the University of Sydney Library was thought to be the only one in existence until shortly after the author's death in 1990, when a second copy then came to light. The work comprises, as indicated by the title, some thirteen poems, written when the author was between the ages of fifteen and seventeen, in the period 1927 to1929. The book was privately published by the author's mother, and he is reputed to have had such a violent antipathy to the work that throughout his lifetime he systematically destroyed every copy which he could obtain. The copy in the University of Sydney Library was obtained via the collection of the Australian bibliophile, Colin Berckelman, and access to the copy was restricted by agreement with Patrick White until after his death.
