Biographical Sketch
Enit Zerner Kaufman (1908?-1961) was born near Vienna, where she later studied art. Her primary interest was portraiture, and she soon created a name for herself painting prominent Europeans, including Albert Sarraut and Georges Duhamel, among others. Her work was featured in several successful exhibitions in Paris, where her skillful paintings of women and children also attracted attention. Her life and career were changed dramatically by the onset of World War II, and she fled the turbulence of Europe for an uncertain future in New York City in 1939, along with her husband Edward, a lawyer. Kaufman worked with great determination in the United States to resume her interrupted career and achieved some success, teaching art and working to rebuild her reputation as a portraitist. As had been the case in Europe, many of her subjects were prominent figures in government, education, and the arts. She had the distinction of painting four American Presidents, including Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Her work was featured in a number of exhibitions in the 1940s and 1950s, including an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, and another at the New York Historical Society.

D.139 EASTMAN RESEARCH MATERIALS 8 boxes, 1 package Background and Scope of Collection: This collection houses a variety of items directly related to George Eastman (1854-1932). There are several scrapbooks, the drafts and a final copy of The University of Rochester Library Bulletin issue from the Spring of 1971, devoted entirely to Eastman, taped oral histories, and an extensive newspaper and serial file that continues to be accumulated. The scrapbooks contain newspaper obituary articles and other articles about George Eastman and about the Eastman Kodak Company. Two of the scrapbooks belonged to Katherine Waring (Mrs. George H.) Whipple. These scrapbooks chronicle the Whipples' friendship with George Eastman. Included with the Whipple scrapbooks is an explanatory key written by Mrs. Whipple and later published in the Fall 1965 Library Bulletin . The collection also contains a set of Mrs. Whipple's childhood reminiscences, Childhood in Charleston in the Not-So-Gay Nineties , published in 1960, and an addition to these memoirs.

    http://spazioinwind.libero.it/gastroepato/Whipple.htm

    What is it?
Whipple's disease is a rare, multi-visceral, and chronic condition. The clinical presentation is typically dominated by a symptom triad of diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Digestive symptoms are often preceded for months or years by other symptoms, the most common being arthralgia, although cardio-vascular, neurologic or pulmonary involvement may be more prominent at times. Allchin and Hebb reported the first Whipple's disease case in 1895, however, they did not realize that their patient had a unique disease. George Hoyt Whipple in 1907 recognized the first case of the disease that now bears his name, when he reported the results of the autopsy on a 36-years old physician, serving as a missionary in Constantinopole. The next case reported in the literature was in 1923. In 1949, Black-Schaffer demonstrated that the macrophages found in the intestinal mucosa of a patient with Whipple's disease stained vividly by the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) method.
