Alfred Werner Assistant Professorship The Werner Foundation was established in 1944 with the goal to support talented young chemists through grants for advanced study. A reorientation of the Foundation in 1990 to adapt to the evolving academic landscape has led to the introduction of the Alfred Werner Fellowship, named for the first Swiss Nobel laureate in chemistry. In 2002, the Fellowship was transformed into the Alfred Werner Assistant Professorship. The Alfred Werner Foundation has introduced the Alfred Werner Assistant Professorship to promote young faculty in chemical disciplines in Switzerland. The Alfred Werner Foundation board has decided to erect 2004 a Fellowship supporting a second Alfred Werner Assistant Professorship. The Fellowship will be awarded for an initial three (3) year period, and can be renewed for a second three (3) year period upon application to the Foundation. The Fellowship serves the goal of promoting the development of young faculty in chemical disciplines in Switzerland. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and at least one year of postdoctoral experience.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Alfred Werner The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1913 Alfred Werner, son of factory foreman J. A. Werner and his wife Jeanne, nee Tesche, was born on December 12, 1866, at Mulhausen in Alsace, where he went to school. From 1885 until 1886 he did his military service in Karlsruhe and, during this, attended the lectures of Engler at the Technical High School in that city. In 1886 he attended lectures at the Federal Technical High School at Zurich and in 1889 obtained there the Diploma in Technical Chemistry. In 1890 he took his degree in the University of Zurich with a thesis on the spatial arrangements of the atoms in molecules containing nitrogen. From 1890 until 1891 he did further work on this subject and visited Paris, where he worked under Professor Berthelot at the College de France. Werner's name will always be associated with the theory of coordination which he established and with his work on the spatial relationships of atoms in the molecule, the foundations of which were laid in the work he did, when he was only 24, for his doctorate thesis in 1892. In this work he formulated the idea that, in the numerous compounds of tervalent nitrogen, the three valence bonds of the nitrogen atom are directed towards the three corners of a tetrahedron, the fourth corner of this being occupied by the nitrogen atom. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1913 "in recognition of his work on the linkage of atoms in molecules by which he has thrown new light on earlier investigations and opened up new fields of research especially in organic chemistry".

How about a word association game to loosen everyone up? You start
by saying a word and each person in the room does an association
with the previous word.
Bring some boxes with balls, pieces of cloth, magazine clippings, jacks,
and other random stuff and have people put them into piles and then
justify their sorting criteria.

Szwajcarski chemik nieorganik. W latach 1890 - 1891 kontynuowa³ badania w Pary¿u w College de France w laboratorium Berthelota . Od 1893 r. by³ profesorem chemii Uniwersytetu w Zurychu. Rozwija³ wszechstronne badania dotycz±ce budowy zwi±zków nieorganicznych. Sformu³owa³ teoriê budowy zwi±zków koordynacyjnych, któr± uzasadni³ licznymi wynikami do¶wiadczalnymi.
