HEXOL By Prof. Robert J. Lancashire Department of Chemistry University of the West Indies, Mona, JAMAICA Werner Complexes The history of modern coordination chemistry has been the subject of several books, of which perhaps the best known are those by George B. Kauffman . By necessity they all highlight Alfred Werner, "the Father of Coordination Chemistry", who in 1893, as a young unsalaried lecturer in organic chemistry, proposed the octahedral and square planar models for transition metal complexes. Later that year, Werner was appointed at the University of Zurich to teach organic chemistry and subsequently 45 of his 174 publications dealt with the organic chemistry of oximes, hydroxamic acids, and dyestuffs etc. In fact, it was not until 1902-1903 that he started to teach the main lecture course in inorganic chemistry. During the period 1893 until his death in 1919, he directed numerous dissertations (some 200 altogether, 56 of these between 1894 and 1902) and maintained a vibrant laboratory which must obviously have benefitted from collaborators from countries as diverse as Japan, Italy, UK, Sweden, the USA, and the USSR. Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1946-1982) Controversial and prolific German director and playwright, who attracted attention with his politically committed and disillusioned stage plays and films. Fassbinder's central theme was the political and social corruption of postwar Germany. He wrote most of his plays in 1968-71 for his own "anti-theatre" in Munchen. Fassbinder completed 41 films. Among his best-known works include The Marriage of Maria Braun Berlin Alexanderpatz Effi Briest (1974), based on Theodore Fontane's novel from 1894. "To show the narrative on film is like the author telling a story, but there's a difference. When one reads a book, one creates - as a reader - one's own images, but when a story is told on screen in pictures, then it is concrete and really "complete" One is not creative as a member of a film audience, and it was this passivity that I tried to counter in Effi Brief . Alfred Werner (1866-1919) Chemist born in Mulhouse, in December 12th 1866, and died in Zurich, in November 15th 1919. Studied in Karlsruhe, Zurich and Paris. Was co-worker of Berthelot in Paris and teacher of Organic Chemistry in Zurich. His more valuable work refers to the stereochemistry of nitrogen compounds. In 1893, enunciated the theory of residual valences, that made possible the discovery of isomers of many metallic combinations. Received the Nobel Prize of Chemistry in 1913.
