Executive summary: Co-discoverer of DNA James Watson was a bright young American who entered the University of Chicago at the age of 15. He was particularly interested in birds, and quickly earned a BS and Ph.D. in zoology, then went to Europe to study genetics. At Cambridge, he met a Brit named Francis Crick , and together with their colleague Maurice Wilkins, they tried to elucidate the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). They felt Linus Pauling , then the world's most famous chemist, was breathing down their necks, and they desperately wanted to solve the DNA riddle before he did. Pauling had already come close, but it was Crick, Watson, and Wilkins who first showed that the collected clues only made sense if DNA were structured like two twisting, spiral ladders the double helix. Some have suggested that Rosalind Franklin, who worked with Crick, Watson, and Wilkins, may deserve much more credit than she's been given. The evidence clearly shows she was intimately involved in the research of DNA's structure; that she pointed out the flaws in an early Crick-Watson theory that suggested three, not two, DNA chains; and that Crick and Watson used Franklin's x-ray DNA photographs before obtaining her permission. Franklin, however, died in 1958, four years before Crick, Watson, and Wilkins got their Nobel Prizes.

JAMES WATSON Genetic Scientist Watson and fellow scientist Francis Crick were the first to describe the hidden double-helix structure of DNA molecules. The discovery was considered tremendously significant, and in 1962 Watson and Crick and their collaborator Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Later Watson was on the faculty of Harvard University for 21 years.

Watson shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins in 1962 for describing the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. Then a Harvard University faculty member, Watson became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, N.Y., in 1968, its president in 1994, and its chancellor in November 2003. From 1989 to 1993, Watson also served as director of the National Center for Human Genome Research at the National Institutes of Health. During that time, Watson launched the worldwide effort to map and sequence the human genome. Saturday Review in 1969 of The Double Helix But, as Watson noted in an interview published in the July 2003 issue of Discover magazine, he had set out to write a good book, not a scientific treatise. In fact, he told Discover that he was more proud of his two books, The Molecular Biology of the Gene and The Double Helix , than he was of his co-discovery of the structure of DNA, simply because someone else would have soon discovered it if he had not.

of the double helix from Cambridge Physics.
Nobody could accuse James Dewey Watson of being a bore. The man who co-discovered the DNA double helix is an effusive purveyor of outrageous views, politically incorrect comments and scurrilous gossip.
At 75, Watson has lost little of the naughty boy reputation he gained 50 years ago when he and Francis Crick made the scientific discovery of the century.
It is difficult to overstate the size of Watson and Crick's achievement. With a blindingly brilliant insight, they had suddenly defrocked the mysterious unit of inheritance – the gene. Out of that one staggering breakthrough a whole new era of understanding emerged, not just in molecular biology and medicine but in the wider field of human nature, psychology and anthropological origins. If this was not enough, the double helix itself became an icon of the late 20th century. It was, quite simply, the Mona Lisa of science.
Watson was only 25 when he and Crick, then 37, published a short description of the double helix in the journal

Manila Science High School The DNA Helix - a strand that provides all information of our genetic make-up. Understanding the codes and the structure oif this strand is really a tough job, but that's where Dr. James Dewey Watson excelled at. James Dewey Watson is one of the foremost scientists who pioneered in the field of genetics. He was born on April 6, 1928 at Chicago, Illinois. By 1947, he had grown a passion for the classics and bird watching which might be the reason for Harvard not accepting him for graduate studies. He then studied at Indiana where he got his Ph.D. in genetics. By the 1950's, Watson joined the Cavendish laboratories at the time when the other scientists (Crick, Wilkins, Pauling and Franklin) were racing to find the structure of the DNA strand. The X-ray crystallography experiments of Franklin and Wilkins provided that the DNA is a molecule with two strands that forms a tightly linked pair. Watson and Crick by 1953 then proposed that the structure of the DNA was a winding helix (a structure resembling that of a twisted ladder) in which pairs of bases (guanine pairs with cytosine and adenine pairs with thymine) join the two strands together. Their research gave the grounds for further study of the DNA strand, namely, it allowed the scientists to explain how the DNA replication works where the strand "unzips" and break off, the parts serving as templates for the creation of new DNA strands. His research on the structure of the DNA strand gave him and his colleauges (Crick and Franklin) the Nobel Prize on molecular biology in 1962. By 1968, he became the director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, a financially unstable but renowned institution. He also made considerable contributions in understanding the genetic code and controlling protein synthesis fascilitated by DNA templates.

Watson "grew up" in the famous " phage group ," of which his advisor was a founder. Phage group guru Max Delbruck was a mentor to Watson. Watson spent much time at Cold Spring Harbor in the late '40s and '50s. In 1950, Watson spent a year in Copenhagen, working with Herman Kalckar Caspersson. In 1951 he went to Cambridge University's famed Cavendish laboratory, headed by Sir Lawrence Bragg, to learn crystallography. There, he teamed up with 35-year-old grad student Francis Crick to work out a model for the structure of DNA, the double helix. They published this model in Nature in 1953. Watson shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins. At the time he was a professor at Harvard, where he ran a joint lab with Walter Gilbert, who later was to receive the Nobel Prize in 1980. In 1968 he became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory . He commuted back and forth between CSHL and Harvard until 1976, when he became the Lab's director full-time. From 1988 to 1992, Watson directed the National Center for Human Genome Research. In 1994, he became President of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
