The People of Genetics James Dewey Watson James Dewey Watson was born on April 6, 1928 in Chicago Illinois. He is the only son of James D. Watson, a businessman, and Jean Mitchell. James' entire childhood was spend in Chicago, where he attended the Horace Mann Grammar School for eight years, then another two years at South Shore High School. In the summer of 1943, he entered the University of Chicago's experimental four year college on a tuition scholarship. In 1947 Watson received a B. Sc. degree in Zoology and later Fellowship for graduate study in Zoology at the Indiana University in Bloomington. He acquired his Ph. D. degree in Zoology in 1950 Ever since he was young Watson had an interest in birds, which stirred him to learn genetics. He was greatly influenced by geneticists H. J. Muller and T. M. Sonneborn, who were faculty of Indiana's Bacteriology Department. With the guidance of S. E. Luria, Watson's Ph. D. thesis was a study of the effect of hard x-rays on bacteriophage multiplication. From 1950 to 1951 he worked in Copenhagen as a Merck Fellow of the National Research Council. While there he studied bacteria viruses, investigating the DNA of infecting viruses. In the spring of 1951, Watson went to the Zoological Station at Naples and in late May met Maurice Wilkins. Wilkins showed him the x-ray diffraction pattern of crystalline DNA that he discovered. Watson then changed his research to structural chemistry of nucleic acid and proteins. He began working at Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in October 1952, where he met Francis Crick. The two men shared an interest in discovering the DNA structure and began their efforts together. All efforts were unsuccessful until March of 1953 when they used more experimental evidence and literature to come up with the double helix model. From 1953 to 1955 Watson was at the California Institute of Technology as Senior Research Fellow in Biology. Along with Alexander Rich, he studied RNA with x-ray diffraction. Watson worked again with Crick back at Cavendish from 1955-1956 publishing papers together on the principles of virus construction.

James Watson James Dewey Watson (born April 6 ) is one of the discoverers of the structure of the DNA molecule. Born in Chicago, Illinois , he enrolled at the age of 15, earned a B.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Chicago in and a Ph.D. in Zoology at Indiana University at Bloomington in before heading to Copenhagen for postdoctoral work. In , he started at Cavendish Laboratory , where he met Francis Crick . Building on the X-ray diffraction research of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins , they together deduced the double helix structure of DNA, which they published in the journal Nature on April 25, . Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery in In Watson wrote The Double Helix , one of the Modern Library 's 100 best non-fiction books. The account is the sometimes painful story of not only the discovery of DNA, but the personalities, conflicts and controversy surrounding their work. In , Watson's achievement and success led to his appointment as the Head of the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health , a position he held until Like Francis Crick , Watson is an outspoken atheist , known for his frank opinions on politics, religion, and the role of science in society. He has been considered to hold a number of controversial views.

James Watson
James Dewey Watson, one of the most important researchers in the field of genetics, was born on April 6, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois. Being a very good student, he enrolled at the University of Chicago when he was only 15 years old and graduated in 1947. However, both Cal. Tech and Harvard University turned him down for their graduate programs. So he ended up in Indiana, where he finished a Ph. D. in Genetics, and received a National Research Fellowship to spend a year in Copenhagen. At a conference held at the Zoological Station in Naples, he met Maurice Wilkins, whose work convinced him to direct his research towards the structure of nucleic acids and proteins. In 1950, Watson joined Cavendish Laboratories where many other important people involved in archeology, such as Francis Crick , Maurice Wilkins, and Rosalind Franklin were trying to determine the makeup of DNA. They had already determined that DNA was a molecule with two "strands" that formed a tight pair. It was Crick and Watson who made the next big discovery. They proposed that DNA was a winding helix in which pairs of bases held the strands together. This model of the DNA double helix became an important item of research in the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. In 1968, Watson published his DNA discovery and entitled it
