HName: Kurz, Otto DateBorn: 1908 Placeborn: Vienna, Austria Datedied: 1975 Placedied: London, United Kingdom HDescrip: Kurz was the son of a medical doctor, Maximilian Kurz (1871-1941) and Anna Mandel (Kurz) (1884-1941). He attended the humanistiches Gymnasium in Vienna before entering the University of Vienna to study art history in 1927. There he heard lectures by Josef Strzygowski (q.v.) and Hans Tietze (q.v.), eventually completing his dissertation in 1931 under Julius von Schlosser (q.v.) on the topic of the early work of Guido Reni, then a much under-valued artist. For two years he taught a course on conservation at the Institut für Österreichischen Geschichtsforschung, an institution modeled after the École des Chartres. He also volunteered in the main art-history library of Vienna, the Österreichisches Museum für Kunst und Industrie. Kurz assisted fellow Schlosser student Ernst Kris (q.v.), now a curator at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, on the myths of artists, which appeared as the book Die Legende vom Künstler in 1933. While still a Schlosser student, Nazi thugs took advantage of the police immunity in the university, bludgeoning Kurz, a Jew, in the middle of the university library. Untimately unable to find work in an Austria evermore aligning itself with Nazi Germany, Schlosser and Kris, helped Kurz secure a job at the private Warburg Library in Hamburg, then under the direction of Fritz Saxl (q.v.). Saxl returned to Vienna only long enough to pass the eleven examinations at the Geschichtsforschung institute (1933). When Saxl moved the Warburg to London, Kurz was invited to emigrate to England as well. In England he completed the first volume of Warburg's

ca.1880-1956 ( Bulk:
(10.75 linear feet) Ms. Coll. 4 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract A pioneer biochemist, Carl Neuberg's spent over thirty years of his productive career as a professor at the University of Berlin (1903-1937) and as Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes of Biochemistry and Experimental Therapy. His varied research interests resulted in important contributions to the understanding of fermentation processes, solubility and transport phenomena in cells, the chemistry of carbohydrates, sugars, enzymes, and amino acids, and photochemistry. Neuberg was forced out of his position after the Nazi rise to power, and taking refuge in the United States. For the last several years of his life, he worked at New York University. The Neuberg collection consists of correspondence, lab notebooks, documents, photographs, and reprints, nearly all dating from after Neuberg's departure from Germany in 1940. The correspondence documents Neuberg's late-career work and the contacts he developed with American chemical manufacturers and industries involved in fermentation, as well as the burgeoning post-war relationship between scientific research and the federal dollar. Files for the American Cancer Society, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the U.S. Public Health Service in particular contain useful information for study of the politics and mechanics of government grants.

Warburg, Otto, (Heinrich) (szül. 1883. okt. 8. Freiburg im Breisgau, Németország – megh. 1970. aug. 1. Nyugat-Berlin, Németország), német biokémikus; a sejtlégzés vizsgálatáért 1931-ben orvosi-élettani Nobel-díjjal tüntették ki. A Berlini Egyetemen szerzett kémiai és a Heidelbergben elnyert orvosi doktorátussal (1906, ill. 1911) Warburg a berlin-dahlemi intézetek prominens személyisége lett. Az 1920-as évek elejétôl foglalkozott a sejtlégzéssel.

"Probatum est per me":
The Heidelberg Electors as
Practioners and Patrons of the Medical and Magical Arts

Excerpt
By the time of the Thirty Years' War, when its volumes were carried off by the Austrian commander Tilly and then transported to Rome, the Bibliotheca Palatina contained almost 10,000 works. The works confiscated included not only the volumes of the various libraries of Heidelberg University, founded by Ruprecht I in 1386, but also the personal collections of the Palatine electors. The extensiveness of the collection and the uniqueness of many of its holdings attest to the importance of Heidelberg as a center of learning during the later Middle Ages and the early modern era. This study focuses on the types of medical manuscripts obtained for the Bibliotheca Palatina and examines the contributions and interests of three generations of electors: Philipp der Aufrichtige (Philip the Upright, d. 1508), Ludwig V (d. 1544), and Otto Heinrich (d. 1559). Their initiatives reflected prevailing contemporary attitudes toward the medicaland what might be considered today as pseudo-medicalsciences and shaped the tradition of medical manuscript collecting and copying in Heidelberg in the sixteenth century. In addition, with electoral impetus and support Heidelberg became a locus for the pursuit of alchemcial remedies and experiments by mid-century. . . .
In addition to his interest in alchemical writings, Otto Heinrich had a long-standing curiosity regarding astrology and other secret sciences; for example, some twenty years before he became elector, he had consulted astrologers concerning favorable days to conduct political meetings.
