Lech Walesa burst into the world spotlight in 1980 during the infamous Lenin Shipyard strike in Gdansk, Poland. Workers, incensed by an increase in prices set by the Communist government, were demanding the right to organize free and independent trade unions.
On Aug. 14, Lech Walesa, an electrician who had long been active in the underground labor movement, arrived at the barricaded shipyard just as the dispirited workers were on the verge of abandoning their strike. Scaling the shipyard walls, he delivered a stirring speech from atop a bulldozer. Revitalized by his passion, the strike spread to factories across the nation. Christened “Solidarity,” the strike became a social revolution.
Walesa entered into negotiations with the government, convincing it to grant legal recognition to Solidarity and the right to form independent unions and to strike to workers. This became the Gdansk Agreement, which Walesa signed on Aug. 31.
For his heroic efforts, Walesa was named “Man of the Year” by

Lech Walesa "Democracy must be practiced," said the former president of Poland, Lech Walesa. "Compare it to swimming where there is only one way to learn, enter the water.
A man whose leadership and heroics earned him a place in history as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century, Walesa had much to share with the crowd who gathered to hear him speak at the Fall Schooler Lecture in October 1998. Walesa was named Man of the Year by Time magazine and as Mount Union College President Harold M. Kolenbrander said, "is a symbol of trium-phant struggles that have changed the world." The focus of Walesa's speech was his belief that the U.S. is the only superpower left. He said that at one time countries like Poland counted on the American dollar and American soldiers for protection, however, now it is time to expect something different from the U.S. He believes that the job of the U.S. now is to provide the world with solutions to its problems and said today's generation has the perfect opportunity to do this by stressing the ideals of democracy and the importance of voting. "When I observe so much injustice and suffering in the world, I consider all this an obligation in order for future generations to have a better world," Walesa said.

Past Presidential Speaker - Lech Walesa President Lech Walesa
October 18, 2001 Lech Walesa burst into the world spotlight in 1980 during the infamous Lenin Shipyard strike in Gdansk, Poland. Workers, incensed by rising prices set by the Communist government, were demanding the right to organize free independent trade unions. Walesa was released that same fall. Under his leadership, Solidarity continued to exist as an underground organization. Celebrated worldwide as a symbol of the hope for freedom, Walesa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. For the next five years, the country became marked more and more by chaos and labor unrest. Acknowledging that it could no longer control the country, the government re-legalized Solidarity and invited the Communist Party in forming a coalition government. In the resulting election, Solidarity won almost every contest. His leadership having ended Communist rule and planted the seeds of freedom and democracy in his beloved country, Walesa was ready to take on a new role to serve Poland. On December 9, 1990, he became its first democratically elected president, winning more than 74 percent of the votes cast. His term of office set Poland firmly on the path to becoming a free market democracy. Through his unwavering commitment, Walesa made Poland a model of economic and political reform for the rest of Eastern Europe to follow and earned it the honor of receiving one of the first invitations to join an expanded NATO. He now heads the Lech Walesa Institute whose aim is to advance the ideals of democracy and free market reform throughout Eastern Europe and the rest of the world.

Leszek ("Lech") Walesa

Walesa, Lech
Lech Walesa speaking to striking shipyard workers in Gdansk, Poland, 1988 [Video] (b. Sept. 29, 1943, Popowo, near Wloclawek, Pol.), labour activist who helped form and led (1980-90) communist Poland's first independent trade union, Solidarity . The charismatic leader of millions of Polish workers, he went on to become the president of Poland (1990-95) and received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1983. Mieczyslaw Jagielski, Poland's first deputy premier, signed an agreement conceding to the workers the right to organize freely and independently. As the leader of the now-underground Solidarity movement, Walesa was subjected to constant harassment until collapsing economic conditions and a new wave of labour unrest in 1988 forced Poland's government to negotiate with him and other Solidarity leaders. These negotiations led to an agreement that restored Solidarity to legal status and sanctioned free elections for a limited number of seats in the newly restored upper house of the Sejm (Parliament). Solidarity won an overwhelming majority of those seats in June 1989, and after Walesa refused to form a coalition government with the communists, the Parliament was forced to accept a Solidarity-led government, though Walesa himself refused to serve as premier. Walesa helped his Solidarity colleague Tadeusz Mazowiecki become premier of this government in 1989, but he ran against Mazowiecki for president in 1990 and won Poland's first direct presidential election by a landslide. As president, Walesa helped guide Poland through its first free parliamentary elections (1991) and watched as successive ministries converted Poland's state-run economy into a free-market system. Walesa had displayed remarkable political skills as the leader of Solidarity, but his plain speech, his confrontational style, and his refusal to approve a relaxation of Poland's strict new prohibitions on abortion eroded his popularity late in his term as president. In 1995 he sought reelection but was narrowly defeated by the former communist Aleksander Kwasniewski, head of the Democratic Left Alliance.
