O n June 7, 1954, the official dedication of the new Institute took place, two years after Dr. Waksman received the Noble Prize for the discovery of streptomycin. He was also its first director. At its opening it was an impressive 302-foot long Georgian Colonial style building overlooking the golf course of the University. It harbored 33,000 square feet of usable space which included a lecture hall seating 200 people, a library with 7,000 volumes, a fermentation pilot plant with vessels ranging in size from five to 300 gallons, and such amenities, long since destroyed, as a dining room with a kitchen, a living room and a museum. The bulk of the remainder of the royalties received from the sales of these antibiotics were then used to partially support the Institute of Microbiology.

T he new expansion has stimulated the introduction of interdisciplinary programs with chemical and biochemical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences, and plant sciences. Evolution of the research mission from the early days to today has led from a diversity of disciplines centered around antibiotics to the unified discipline of molecular genetics with a more diverse set of biological problems. Today the Institute employs faculty teams that concentrate on certain classes of organisms amenable to genetic analysis such as bacteria and fungi (

Selman Waksman
born July 22, 1888, Priluka, Ukraine, Russian Empire
died Aug. 16, 1973, Hyannis, Mass., U.S.
Ukrainian-born U.S. biochemist. He became a U.S. citizen in 1916 and spent most of his career at Rutgers University. After the discovery of penicillin, he played a major role in initiating a calculated, systematic search for antibiotics (a term he coined in 1941) among microorganisms. His 1943 discovery of streptomycin, the first specific agent effective in the treatment of tuberculosis, brought him a 1952 Nobel Prize. Waksman also isolated and developed several other antibiotics, including neomycin, that have been used in treating many infectious diseases of humans, domestic animals, and plants.

    Abstract:
Beginning in the early 1950s, a series of epidemiological, biochemical, pathological, and animal studies demonstrated a link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. A number of reputable scientists challenged these findings, but for a variety of reasons, including the behavior of the tobacco industry, historians have assumed that these objections were insubstantial and disingenuous. Viewing these objections in scientific and medical perspective, however, suggests that there was a legitimate and reasonable scientific controversy over cigarette smoking and lung cancer in the 1950s and early 1960s. That controversy had important consequences. A new chronic disease epidemiology emerged, transforming the role and importance of epidemiology to medical research. This new epidemiology supplemented Koch's postulates, establishing a statistical method that allowed for linking environmental factors to the etiology of chronic diseases. The 1964 report to the surgeon general, Smoking and Health , represented the denouement and codification of these developments. This reexamination of the scientific controversy over smoking in the 1950s and early 1960s provides an important context for understanding the subsequent public relations battles between the tobacco industry and public health after 1964.

THE WORLD CELEBRITY,
UNKNOWN IN HIS HOMERLAND
Not long ago the funds of the Central Museum of Medicine of Ukraine were replenished with the materials which were kindly sent us from the USA, about an outstanding American scientist Professor Selman Abraham Waksman, who was born in Ukraine. He became in history of medicine as one of the founders of comtemporary microbiology, discovered streptomycin and other valuable drugs, and who was awarded the Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, till recently we knew too little about our famous compatriot, and now we take the opportunity to tell about him more in detail.
S.A.Waksman was born on July 22, 1888 in a small town in Ukraine. By mistake it was considered the town of Priluky, but in fact it was the settlement of Nova Priluka in Kyiv province (now, the village of Nova Priluka, Vinytsia region). In 1910 he finished teaching in the Odessa gymnasium and in the same year he came to the USA. A year after his arrival he entered the College of Agriculture at the Rutgers University (New Jersey) where he studied microbiology of soils. After graduating from the college he worked in the New York research laboratory of soil bacteriology where the master's degree in sciences was conferred on him (1916), and soon he could continue his researches at the University of California, and in 1918 he became a doctor of biology. In the same year he came back to Rutgers University, where from 1930 Waksman occupied the post of a professor.
In 1949 the Institute of Microbiology as a part of Rutgers University was created on the initiative of S. A.Waksman. He headed this institute till 1958, when he went into retirement. Today this institute bears the name of Waksman.
