AUGUST 16 - BIRTHS Wendell Stanley

Born 16 Aug 1904; died 15 Jun 1971
Wendell Meredith Stanley was a Spanish-American biochemist , who received (with John Northrop and James Sumner) the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1946 for his work in the purification and crystallization of viruses, thus demonstrating their molecular structure. This work began in 1935 when Stanley crystallized tobacco mosaic virus, the first such purification of a virus. He then believed, incorrectly, that protein was the active agent of the virus. By 1936 he isolated nucleic acids from the tobacco mosaic virus, which later (1955) will be found to cause the viral activity. Hugo Gernsback

American inventor (80 patents) and publisher who was largely responsible for the establishment of science fiction as an independent literary form. In 1926, Hugo Gernsback was the owner of a magazine called Modern Electrics. One day, he found that he had a blank spot in his publication, so he dashed off the first chapter of series called "Ralph 124C 41+." "Ralph" was an amazing success. The 12-part story was filled with all kinds of wild inventions unheard of in 1926, including television (he is

In this achievement earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Born in Priluka , Ukraine , Waksman immigrated to the United States and graduated from Rutgers University in with a B.Sc. degree in Agriculture . He performed research in soil bacteriology under Dr. J. G. Lipman at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station before being awarded his M.Sc. degree in 1916. Waksman became a naturalized U.S. citizen and was appointed a Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley where he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1918. He later joined the faculty at Rutgers University in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. It was at Rutgers that Waksman discovered several antibiotics, including streptomycin He is also the author of several books:

He attended Greenleaf Academy in Idaho, and then took his B.S. degree from the College of Idaho in 1923. While at the college, he met Dorothy Youmans (1902-1994) whom he married on August 6, 1924. The Hinshaws had four children; his two sons followed him into medical careers, while one daughter became a zoologist and author, and the other an educator. After spending a year in advanced studies at the University of Pittsburgh, Hinshaw took an M.S. degree at the University of California, Berkeley in 1926, and completed his Ph.D. at the same institution the following year. From 1927-1931, he taught Parasitology and Bacteriology at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Returning to the United States, Hinshaw earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1933. He was subsequently recruited to work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he developed his interest in diseases of the lung.

Introduction
This bibliography cites writings through which may be traced the evolution of organic/sustainable agriculture and its pattern of philosophical and scientific aspects. It is not a comprehensive list, but the interested reader will find authors' references, individual bibliographies, and sources within the cited writings which will widen the traced path. Three recent compilations have been of invaluable assistance in the preparation of this bibliography: R. R. Harwood* and M. C. Merrill*, writing in 1983 I and A. M. Scofield* (who wrote a brief article on the origin of the name "organic farming" in 1986) included in their writings citations to selected important works, many of which are cited here. In addition, acknowledgment is made.of the work of the Canadian "Ecological Agriculture Project" (EAP) of the Macdonald College of McGill University, which has also compiled annotated lists of the literature of ecological agriculture and of selected background works of holistic approaches to agriculture. All of the works cited here are in the collection of the National Agricultural Library, and NAL's call numbers are included in the citations. Directly below the call-number is a "cited in" reference which refers to one or more of the following listed authors:
