Selman Abraham Waksman was born in Priluka, near Kiev, Russia, on July 22nd, 1888, as the son of Jacob Waksman and Fradia London. He received his early education primarily from private tutors, and completed his school training in Odessa in an evening school and with private tutors. He obtained his matriculation diploma in 1910 from the Fifth Gymnasium in Odessa as an extern, and left for the United States immediately afterwards.
In the autumn of 1911 he entered Rutgers College, having won a State Scholarship the previous spring. He received his B.Sc. degree in Agriculture from Rutgers in 1915. He was then appointed research assistant in soil bacteriology under Dr. J. G. Lipman at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, and was allowed to continue graduate work at Rutgers, obtaining his M.Sc. degree in 1916. In the same year, he became a naturalized United States citizen and was appointed a Research Fellow at the University of California where he received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1918.
He was invited by Dr. Lipman to return to Rutgers, where he received an appointment as microbiologist at the Experiment Station and as Lecturer in Soil Microbiology at the University. He was appointed Associate Professor in 1925 and Professor in 1930. When the Department of Microbiology was organized in 1940, he became Professor of Microbiology and Head of the Department. In 1949, he was appointed Director of the Institute of Microbiology. He retired in 1958. However, he has a laboratory and office at the Institute to continue a limited amount of research and considerable writing and lecturing.

Selman Abraham Waksman was born of Jewish descent in Novaya Priluka in the Ukraine. He immigrated to New Jersey, America at 22 years of age. In 1915, he graduated at Rutgers University with a degree in Agriculture, later expanding the curriculum, embracing the study of bacteria, actinomycetes, protozoa, and fungi. In 1918, he received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California. Waksman expanded the scientific field of soil microbiology publishing over 28 books, including "Principles of Soil Microbiology" (1927), "The Soil and the Microbe" (1931) and "Humus" (1936). He travelled widely in the 1920's and 1930's and carried out systematic studies of composts throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. In 1952, Waksman obtained the Nobel Prize for medicine and is respected for his contribution to the science of microbiology.
"An antibiotic is a chemical substance produced by a microbe which has the capacity to inhibit the growth of and even to destroy other microbes."

  • Selman Abraham Waksman was born near Kiev, Russia.
When he was younger he probably had not envisioned his future job having anything to do with investigating peat bogs.
In 1911 he entered Rutgers College.
In 1916 he became a United States citizen and was appointed at the University of California where he received his Ph.D. two years later.
A few of his fields of work were: the microbiological population of the soil, sulfur oxidation by bacteria, microorganisms and soil fertility, and decomposition of plant and animal residues.
He held doctorates in agriculture, science, law, and medicine.
He isolated, with the assistance of associates and students, many antibiotics: actinomycin, clavacin, streptothricin, streptomycin, grisein, neomycin, fradicin, candicidin, candidin, and more. Streptromycin and neomycin have both been patented, and streptomycin was recently listed as one of the top ten patents that changed the world.
Waksman's discovery of streptomycin (an effective antibiotic for treating tuberculosis) got him a Nobel prize for physiology or medicine.
When he started his job, bacteria were known for causing trouble, spoiled food etc. But, no one thought of bacteria as doing good things.

Selman Abraham Waksman
A tuberkolózis ellen hatásos elsõ antibiotikum, a sztreptomicin felfedezéséért kapott Nobel-díjat 1952-ben.

SELMAN A. WAKSMAN (18881973)
(excerpted with permission from The Foundation for Microbology Selman Abraham Waksman, whose insights and discoveries had so profound an effect on the well-being of people around the world, was born of Jewish parents in the village of Novaya Priluka, Russia (now the Ukraine), on July 22, 1888. His childhood experience with anti-semitism and with the abortive revolution of 1905 convinced him that he could not fulfill his dreams and realize his potential in Czarist Russia. Waksman obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry in two years, working with T. Brailsford Robertson at the University of California at Berkeley, and returned to Rutgers in 1918 as a lecturer in soil microbiology. He married his childhood sweetheart, Bertha Deborah Mitnik (Bobili), on 4 August 1916. She went with him to California and they returned to live, first in New York, then in New Brunswick, N.J., close to Rutgers. Their only child, Byron Halsted, was born 15 September, 1919. When Waksman began work in his own laboratory, microorganisms were of known importance in medicine as causes of disease, in public health in connection with sanitation problems such as water purification, in traditional food processing (making of bread, cheese, wine, beer, and vinegar) and agriculture (fertility of the soil). They were responsible for food spoilage and, on a larger scale, for degradation of all animal and plant remains, returning the fundamental building blocks carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen to the air and soil in the great cycles of Nature. They were yet to show their value in industrial production of vitamins, enzymes, and antibiotics.
