Americký fyzik a matematik, který získal Nobelovu cenu za fyziku pro rok 1977 za pøíspìvek k porozumìní chování elektronù v amorfních pevných látkách s magnetickými vlastnostmi. Cenu sdílí s P. W. Andersonem a N. F. Mottem
J. Vleck vystudoval Universitu ve Wisconsinu (stát Madison). PhD získal na Harvardu v roce 1922. V roce 1924 zaèal pracovat na Universitì v Minnesotì (stát Minneapolis). Od roku 1928 do roku 1934 zde pøednášel. poté se vrátil na Harvard, kde se stal vedoucím katedry fyziky (1945-1949), dìkanem fakulty inženýrství a aplikovaném fyziky (1951–57) a nakonec profesorem matematiky a filosofie (1951–69).
Van Vleck na poèátku 30. let vytvoøil první kvantovou teorii magnetismu. Pozdìji se stal uznávaným odborníkem na v oblasti teorie molekulárních vazeb a architektury molekul. Zkoumal i spektra volných molekul, paramagnetismus a další jevy.
