Vleck, John Hasbrouck Van US physicist, considered one of the founders of modern magnetic theory (see magnetism. He shared the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physics with his student Philip Anderson.
Van Vleck was born in Middletown, Connecticut, and studied at the University of Wisconsin and at Harvard. He became professor at Minnesota 1927 and was professor at Harvard 1934-69.
Using wave mechanics, Van Vleck devised a theory that gives an accurate explanation of the magnetic properties of individual atoms in a series of chemical elements. He also introduced the idea of temperature-independent susceptibility in paramagnetic materials - now called Van Vleck paramagnetism. His formulation of the ligand field theory is one of the most useful tools for interpreting the patterns of chemical bonds in complex compounds. This theory explains the magnetic, electrical, and optical properties of many elements and compounds by considering the influences exerted on the electrons in particular atoms by other atoms nearby.

transistor effect and developed the first device in December, 1947, while the three were
members of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ. They were awarded
the Nobel Prize in physics in 1956. Biography A brilliant theorist, Dr. Bardeen brought his keen understanding to the transistor team by explaining effects found in early transistor experiments. Dr. Bardeen, born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, obtained his Ph.D. in mathematics and physics from Princeton University in 1936. A staff member of the
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, from 1938 to 1941, he served as principal physicist at the US Naval Ordinance Laboratory in Washington, DC, during World War II, after which he joined Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.

This list contains the personal and business entries from the 1841 Schenectady city directory. Each address is linked to the street listing, so you may go directly from a name to view a list of neighbors, and back again. In order to minimize the confusion caused by variant spellings and spacing, the normal sorting order has been modified. Last names are filed without regard to case, spacing or punctuation, Mac and Mc are filed together as Mac, and names beginning with St. are under Saint. Entries with no first name are placed at the beginning of the listing for their last name.

OCTOBER 27 - BIRTHS Roscoe Pound
(EB) Born 27 Oct 1870; died 1 Jul 1964.
American jurist and chief advocate of "sociological jurisprudence" who was first active as a botanist and educator. He followed his B.A. in botany with studies in law. Meanwhile, he served as director of the Nebraska state botanical survey (1892-1903), during which time he discovered a rare fungus, subsequently named Roscopoundia . Having been admitted to the Nebraska bar, Pound turned to the practice of law, and eventually became a leader in the reform of court administration in the United States. Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin

Born 27 Oct 1855; died 1935
Russian horticulturist, of little education but some skill in crossbreeding fruit trees to survive the winters of Central Russia. He earned the praise of the Soviet government by developing over 300 new types of fruit trees and berries. His theory of cross-breeding postulated the idea that acquired characteristics were inheritable. His private orchard at Koslov, became a state institution, and in 1932 the city known as Kozlov for four centuries became Michurinsk. When Mendelian genetics came under attack in the Soviet Union, Michurin's theories of hybridization became state doctrine amid much controversy. His ways were elaborated by Trofim D. Lysenko, a Bolshevik

Born 13 Mar 1899; died 27 Oct 1980.
John Hasbrouck Van Vleck was an American physicist and mathematician who shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1977 with Philip W. Anderson and Sir Nevill F. Mott. The prize honoured Van Vleck's contributions to the understanding of the behaviour of electrons in magnetic, noncrystalline solid materials. Clifford M. Holland

Born 13 Mar 1883; died 1924.
Clifford Milburn Holland was the American engineer who designed the 1.5-mile-long Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River, between New York City and Jersey City, NJ. In 1919, Holland, took office as Chief Engineer of the tunnel that would eventually bear his name. Tunnel construction began 12 Oct 1920 and was completed in 1927. In Holland's design , the new problem of noxious gases from internal combustion engines, was solved with huge-capacity fans in ventilating buildings at each end, forcing air through a supply duct below the roadway, with an exhaust duct above the ceiling. Holland did not see his dream come to fruition At age 41, he died one day before construction crews from the two sides met. The tunnel opened 13 Nov 1927. Dayton Clarence Miller

A Nobel Legacy 1974 - 2002 William N. Lipscomb 1919-
Chemistry 1976

Research on the structure of boranes, which has increased the understanding of chemical bonding Lipscomb had had quite a bit of experience by the time he elucidated the unusual chemical make-up of boron - off to college in 1937, he donated his elaborate chemistry set to his high school, doubling the school's chemistry inventory. The scientist, known for his clarinet playing and Western-style bow ties, describes his mode of reasoning: "I am inclined to make large intuitive jumps and then set about to test the conclusions." Lipscomb is the Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Chemistry Emeritus. John H. Van Vleck 1899-1980
Physics 1977

Pioneered the application of quantum mechanics to the study of magnetism Van Vleck, known for his love of the arts, his quietly piercing wit, and his intense loyalty to Harvard, made cutting-edge contributions to the fields of radioastronomy, microwave spectroscopy, and magnetic resonance. His application of quantum mechanics altered both physics and chemistry, deepening our understanding of atomic systems - from single molecules to crystalline solids. Sheldon L. Glashow 1932-
