Famous Van Vlecks
My second cousin once removed, John H. Van Vleck , one of the fathers of the atomic bomb, worked on radar at the MIT Radiation Laboratory during World War II, then was a professor of physics at Harvard, and won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physics (along with Anderson and Mott, for "Electronic structure of magnetic and disordered solids"). He was at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton before the war, where he worked with many of the famous physicists of the time. He applied Dirac's quantum mechanics to the electric and magnetic properties of atoms, and wrote The Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1932). His theoretical work led to the formation of Los Alamos Laboratories. John H. Van Vleck wrote a festschrift paper in 1971 titled "Group theory for permutation degeneracy in four electrons, and the Pauli exclusion principle," and contributed "Travels with Dirac in the Rockies" to a biography of Dirac. He is regarded as the "Father of Modern Magnetism;" in his later work he studied chemical bonding in crystals, magnetic resonance, computer memories, and the cross correlation of digitized signals. He also won the 1966 National Medal of Science. (I met him twice. Really interesting person.) He died in 1981.

CTSS Creators and Users
Tom Van Vleck I found an old file that listed people who worked on MIT's Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS) and users who supported it. This list is dated 1973 and was used to generate a list of people invited to a ceremony at MIT celebrating the shutdown of the CTSS machine. The ceremony was in March 1974; I missed it because I was out of the country. They gave every attendee a little plaque made from a piece of a 1302 disk used on CTSS. The list was generated from multiple sources, including names mentioned in old Project MAC and Computation Center progress reports, CTSS billing records, and the CTSS manual. Some of these folks have provided contact addresses on the Multicians list

John H. van Vleck
John Hasbrouck Van Vleck, 1899–1980, American Physicist, born in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. Educated entirely in the USA, he taught at Harvard (1922-23) and the University of Minnesota (1923-28), where, in 1926, he expanded English physicist Paul Dirac's quantum mechanics to explain the electric and magnetic properties of atoms. His classical treatise, The Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities (1932), published while he was teaching at the University of Wisconsin (1928-34), earned Van Vleck the title "father of modern magnetism". He promoted the union of physics and chemistry, applying his discoveries to chemical bonding in crystals. Returning to Harvard (1934-69), he used his theory in studies of nuclear magnetic resonance and in the development of computer memory systems. He shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in physics (with Philip Anderson and Nevill Mott) for his pioneering research. His colleagues knew him as a patient, gentle man whose personal interests included collecting detailed information of US and European railroad timetables.

Abigail and John Van Vleck Lectures
John Van Vleck with his wife, Abigail The Van Vleck Lecture Series is made possible by a gift to the Institute of Technology from Abigail Pearson Van Vleck, the wife of John Hasbrouck Van Vleck. John Van Vleck, who died in 1980, served for thirty-five years as Professor and later as Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard University until his retirement in 1969. Early in his career, he was a member of the faculty of the Department of Physics at the University of Minnesota. Van Vleck is universally recognised as the father of modern magnetism.

Minnesota Physics Nobel Laureates
Arthur Compton
Arthur H. Compton began his post-doctoral research in X-ray scattering at Minnesota where he was a physics instructor during 1916-17. While those early experiments were not an immediate success, they paved the way for his Nobel-prize winning discovery of the Compton Effect. In 1922 Compton calculated that a quantum of radiation undergoes a discrete change in wavelength when it experiences a billiard ball collison with an electron at rest in an atom, and his X-ray scattering experiments confirmed this change in wavelength. The phenomenon soon became known as the Compton Effect, and for his discovery he received the Nobel in 1927.
Ernest Lawrence
Ernest O. Lawrence received his masters degree from the University of Minnesota in 1923. He began his research in nuclear physics at Minnesota, which led to his invention six years later of a device for accelerating nuclear particles to very high velocities without the use of high voltages. This device, the cyclotron, was used to bombard atoms of various elements, disintegrating the atoms to form, in some cases, completely new elements. Hundreds of radioactive isotopes of the known elements were also discovered.Ernest O. Lawrence won the Nobel Prize in 1939 for the invention of the cyclotron and for results obtained with it.
