1910 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on the equation of state for gases and liquids. This tends to indicate that he knew his stuff.
OK. The simple rules for gases about pressure, volume and temperature that you learnt in Scuba for beginners are only an approximation. Good enough for some poor lad or lass who has to worry about doing a mask clear without a total sinus washout but now you're grown up and want to breath fancy stuff it just won't do anymore. You haven't forgotten but we'll recap anyway.
Do you remember PV=kT
The ideal gas law? Oh yes. The one that summarised all the others ones that we can't remember the names of. Well let us get rid of that nasty k for an arbitrary constant and turn it into the real one PV=nRT that scientists use. This is much better because we can calculate things with it rather than just do ratios. Let's name the parts in useful units:
P Pressure in bar V Volume in Litres n Quantity of gas in mols R The universal gas constant 0.0831451 if we want to do bar and litres

Life
Van der Waals was born in Leiden , the Netherlands, as the son of Jacobus van der Waals and Elisabeth van den Burg. He became a school teacher, and later was allowed to study at the university, in spite of his lack of education in the field of classical languages . He studied from 1862 to 1865, earning degrees in mathematics and physics . He was married to Anna Magdalena Smit and had three daughters and one son. In 1866, he became director of a secondary school in

Most divers are taught Boyle's law and the universal gas equation which assures us that all gases are "ideal" and their molecules behave like soft rubber balls when they are compressed. The universal gas equation tells us that if a cylinder is filled with a gas to twice its original pressure it contains twice as much of that gas so if a 20 litre twinset is filled with air to 200 bar it contains 200 x 20 = 4,000 litres of useable air and at 300 bar it would contain 6,000 litres so we can easily calculate gas consumption and mixed gas fills.
Unfortunately along comes Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) in spoil-sport mode and says "well not really". Professor Van der Waals received the Nobel prize for physics in 1910 for his work on the equation of state for gases. He showed that real gases do not behave like the supposed ideal gases of Boyle's law. An ideal gas would be composed of infinitely small molecules that did not attract one another but real gases have real sized molecules taking up space and they tend to attract one another in proportion to their weight. This second effect is like gravity and is dominant at pressures used to fill diving cylinders. Thus a quantity of the dimer Oxygen, O2 with a molecular weight of 32, does not generate as much pressure as the same amount of Helium, a monatomic molecule with a molecular weight of 4. As the pressure increases, however, the size of the gas's molecules has the opposite effect allowing less and less gas to be added for an equivalent increase in pressure. The law of diminishing returns!

Johannes Diderik van der Waals: A Life of Achievements
Jaime Wisniak Department of Chemical Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel 84105 Published online: 1 June 2000 Abstract. Van der Waals is one of the most distinguished men in thermodynamics and author of an equation of state that has become the basis of all modern equations of state and theories of mixtures. Here we give a description of his life and his scientific and academic achievements. The van der Waals equation of state is discussed in detail with the goal of understanding the reasons for its inadequacy to give a quantitative prediction of the behavior of a real gas. Publications Introduction Scientists of the Dutch School 3D-Models How Fluids Unmix
Introduction This website gives exposure to highly significant work performed in the Netherlands around 1900 on phase separation and critical behavior of fluids and fluid mixtures. These substances may exist in several different phases: vapor and one or more liquid phases. In addition fluids can transform into one or more solid phases. A characteristic feature of the vapor-liquid phase transition in one-component (or pure) fluids is that it occurs only if the temperature is below a certain temperature called critical, which differs from fluid to fluid. In 1873 the physicist Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) published what is known as the Van der Waals equation, which yields a vapor-liquid phase transition as well as a critical point. The phase separation of even only two-component fluid mixtures is considerably more complicated than that of pure fluids. Two-component mixtures have critical curves instead of critical points. Fluid mixtures may have liquid-liquid phase separation in addition to vapor-liquid separation. Some mixtures can separate into two phases of different density and composition even above the critical temperatures of both components.
