Desmond Mpilo Tutu
Archbishop Emeritus, Cape Town, South Africa Marymount University is pleased to honor The Most Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu for his lifelong dedication to human rights and human dignity and his efforts to promote understanding and reconciliation in South Africa and around the world. Born in Klerksdorp, Transvaal, South Africa, in 1931, Tutu grew up in a South Africa where racial injustice was a way of life. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a doctor but, not having the means for a medical education, initially followed in his father's footsteps and became a teacher. Tutu received a teacher's diploma from Pretoria Bantu Normal College and a bachelor's degree from the University of South Africa. He then taught high school for several years, but found himself unable to accept apartheid Bantu education laws that prescribed inferior instruction for blacks. Deciding that he could do more to bring about change as a member of the Anglican clergy, Tutu attended St. Peter's Theological College in Johannesburg and was ordained in 1961. He continued his theological studies at King's College in London, England, receiving his Bachelor of Divinity Honours and Master of Theology degrees. Returning to South Africa, Tutu became dean of St. Mary's Cathedral in Johannesburg in 1975 and, shortly thereafter, was installed as bishop of Lesotho. As racial tensions grew, Bishop Tutu was named the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches, an ecumenical organization committed to social justice and reconciliation. Under his leadership from 1978 to 1985, this group became an influential spiritual and political influence in South African politics. Tutu gained national and international recognition for his role in calling for an end to apartheid and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Tutu, Desmond Mpilo
Desmond Tutu has formulated his objective as "a democratic and just society without racial divisions", and has set forward the following points as minimum demands: 1. equal civil rights for all 2. the abolition of South Africa's passport laws 3. a common system of education 4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called "homelands" The South African Council of Churches is a contact organization for the churches of South Africa and functions as a national committee for the World Council of Churches. The Boer churches have disassociated themselves from the organization as a result of the unambiguous stand it has made against apartheid. Around 80 percent of its members are black, and they now dominate the leading positions. From Nobel Lectures, Peace 1981-1990.

Archbishop Emeritus, Nobel Peace Prize Winner
Desmond Tutu was just 12 years old when he first met Father Trevor Huddleston, an Anglican cleric and an early outspoken critic of apartheid. While Archbishop Tutu's earliest aspirations were to follow the career path of his father and become a schoolteacher, the life, work and message of Father Huddleston would remain close to the future archbishop for years to come. After earning his teaching diploma and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Africa, Archbishop Tutu spent the next four years teaching at both his alma mater, Johannesburg Bantu High School, and Munsieville High School in Krugersdorp, where he met and married his wife, Leah. In 1958, Archbishop Tutu decided to enter the ministry in the Church of the Province of Southern Africa and become an ordinand at St. Peter's Theological College, Rosettenville. After he was ordained to the priesthood in 1961, he left for London, where he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity Honours and Master of Theology degrees while acting as a part-time curate. Returning to South Africa in 1967, he became chaplain at the University of Fort Hare and later moved to the University of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland in 1970, where he held the post of lecturer in the Department of Theology. He would also return to England to serve as associate director of the Theological Education Fund of the World Council of Churches, based in Kent.

Cleric, anti-apartheid activist, Nobel laureate, and former Chairman of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Mpilo Desmond Tutu was born in Klerksdorp on 7 September 1931. As a youngster he attended Mission schools in Klerksdorp. His father was a teacher, who was educated at Madibane High School between 1945 and 1950. Madibane High School is famous for producing academics and politicians such as mathematician, Dr. John Nkambule, the late editor-in-chief of the Sowetan Agrrey Klaaste , Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy Susan Shabangu , political activist Thomas Nkobe and the first Black woman manager of a South African airport, Thembi Mogoai . In 1954 Tutu completed a teaching diploma from the Pretoria Bantu Normal College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA). After three years in the teaching profession Tutu quit in protest against the deteriorating standard of Black education. This was due to the implementation of the Bantu Education Act of 1953 , which reduced Black education to second rate. He decided to become a priest and enrolled at St Peter's Theological College. He was ordained as a deacon in 1960, and became a priest in 1961. In 1962 he moved to London, where he completed his Honours and Masters degrees in the Arts in 1966.

Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu http://www.moreorless.au.com/heroes/tutu.htm Country: South Africa. Cause: Ending of South African apartheid regime. 1945 - Tutu enters Johannesburg Bantu High School. He matriculates in 1950 then trains as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College, receiving his diploma in 1953. Tutu had wished to become a doctor, but his family could not afford to pay for his training. 1952 - In February the African National Congress (ANC) calls on the government to repeal all unjust laws or face a 'Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust Laws'. Mass rallies and strikes staged on 6 April and 26 June attract thousands of supporters. The government reacts by introducing harsher penalties for protests against apartheid. Campaign leaders and newspapers are banned and about 8,500 people are arrested. The defiance campaign has helped build ANC membership from about 7,000 at the beginning of the year to more than 100,000 by the year's end. 1954 - After graduating with a bachelor of arts from the University of South Africa, Tutu becomes a schoolteacher. 1955 - The ANC writes a 'Freedom Charter' stating that South Africa belongs to all people living within it regardless of race, that all South Africans should be treated equally before the law, and that the country's wealth should be distributed equitably. Meanwhile, Tutu marries on 2 July. He and his wife Leah will have four children.

ARCHBISHOP DESMOND MPILO TUTU Born on October 7, 1931, Archbishop Tutu is best known for his belief in the possibility of ultimate interracial harmony - a conviction that becomes a feat when considering his personal history.
In 1962, apartheid reached the church. White academics could no longer teach black clergymen, and black academics were needed to fill the gap. Tutu’s teaching experience, his two degrees, and his conscientiousness made him an ideal candidate for this duty, though he lacked a master’s degree. In order to fill this gap, he left South Africa in 1962 to pursue a master’s degree at King’s College at London University. He returned to his homeland in 1967 and continued with his mission of teaching black clergy. In 1976, Tutu reached religious prominence and was consecrated as the bishop of Lesotho, an independent enclave within South Africa. The positive events in Tutu’s life were not matched by events at home. A month before his consecration, Soweto, a black community near South Africa’s capital, Johannesburg, exploded in violence as 15,000 schoolchildren took to the streets. They were angry that Afrikaans, instead of English - their typical language of instruction — would be used to teach some of their classes. More than 600 people were killed.

Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu, head of the Anglican Church in South Africa, was the leading spokesman of non-violent resistance to apartheid during 1980s, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984.
Tutu was born in the Transvaal and spent his teen years in Johannesburg, where his mother had taken work at a mission school for the blind. His religious faith was deeply strengthened by the staff's compassion and dedication, and shortly thereafter he met Father Trevor HUDDLESTON, whom he has termed the greatest single influence on his life. Huddleston, then just beginning his career as the leading white foe of apartheid, spent time with Tutu, including daily visits for almost two years when Tutu was in the hospital with tuberculosis. Unable to afford medical school fees after high school, Tutu received a teacher's certificate from the Bantu Normal College in 1953 and a correspondence degree from the University of South Africa the following year. He taught for several years until the government's Bantu education program, guaranteeing second-class status for black South Africans, took effect. With many other teachers, Tutu resigned in 1957.
Throughout his rise in church circles, Tutu was increasingly involved in confronting the patterns of violence in the townships and their root cause: the country's apartheid regime. Firmly committed to a policy of Christian non-violence, Tutu nevertheless was unable to be a passive bystander, and he used his SACC position as a world pulpit. He argued that "to be impartial is to have taken sides already." He strongly endorsed economic sanctions against South Africa on a 1979 trip to Denmark, which led to his passport being lifted for two years. When he was again able to travel, Tutu made an international tour to promote sanctions, which he saw as the best non-violent means of breaking apartheid's power. On his return, his passport was again taken, and thereafter he went abroad with a travel document stamped "nationality undetermined."

Name: Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Birth Date: October 7, 1931 Place of Birth: Klerksdorp, South Africa Nationality: South African Gender: Male Occupations: anti-apartheid activist, religious leader Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Main Biography In the 1980s Archbishop Desmond Tutu (born 1931) became South Africa's most prominent opponent of apartheid, that country's system of racial discrimination. The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize of 1984 to Desmond Mpilo Tutu made him the most visible representative of the struggle in the Republic of South Africa against apartheid, the system by which the minority white population of South Africa dominated the black majority until 1994. It allowed whites, who constituted 20 percent of the population, to reserve for themselves about 87 percent of the land, most natural resources, and all meaningful political power. Blacks who found themselves in lands reserved for whites were arbitrarily made citizens of one of ten homelands, which the white government (but virtually no one else) called nations. In order to remove Blacks from areas reserved for whites, the government forcibly evicted many from their homes, though their families had in some cases occupied them for decades. Blacks in .....
