Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu
AKA 'The Arch'. Country: South Africa. Cause: Ending of apartheid in South African. Background: By 1600 all of what is now South Africa has been settled by indigenous Africans. European intrusion into the region begins in 1652 when the Dutch establish a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope on the southwestern tip of Africa. The British seizure of the settlement in 1795 leads to conflict with the established European farmers (the Boer). The conflict eventually boils over into the Boer War of 1899-1902. The British win but ultimately opt to give South Africa independence. The Union of South Africa is formed on 31 May 1910. Black South Africans have limited voting rights and are subjected to building discrimination. In 1948 the National Party wins the all-white general election on a campaign promise to introduce a system of "apartheid" to totally separate the races. Opposition to the apartheid system by the black majority is ruthlessly suppressed. The National Party will remain in power until 1994. More background Mini biography: Born on 7 October 1931 in Klerksdorp, about 150 km southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. His father is a teacher and his mother a domestic worker. The young Tutu is raised in an atmosphere of tolerance and sympathy where, he later says, "I never learnt to hate". When Tutu is 12 his family moves to Johannesburg.

Archbishop Tutu was consecrated Bishop of Lesotho in 1976 and became General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches in 1978. In 1979 he received an honorary doctorate of laws from Harvard University. The government confiscated his passport in reprisal for his call for an international boycott of South African coal in 1980. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his nonviolent campaign to limit international trade and investment activities in South Africa. The Archbishop established the Southern African Refugee Scholarship Fund with his Nobel Peace Prize Fund, enabling disadvantaged students to further their studies. He became Bishop of Johannesburg in 1985, and Archbishop of Cape Town and head of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa in 1986. He has received numerous awards, prizes and honorary degrees from all over the world. His publications include "Crying in the Wilderness", "Hope and Suffering" (collections of sermons and addresses) and "The Rainbow people of God" which includes biographical material and background narrative by John Allen.

at a funeral in Kwa Thema, 1985.

On Apartheid violence "I myself have said times without number that I am opposed to all forms of violence - that of those who wish to uphold the vicious and unjust and totally immoral and evil system of apartheid and of those who want to overthrow that system. I have said many times before that this institutionalised structural violence of South Africa is making many blacks desperate as they despair of peaceful change, for until 1960 since 1912 their political groups have struggled valiantly to bring about change by peaceful means. But what has been the result? A growing intransigence on the part of the authorities, replying with teargas, police dogs, police bullets and death; an escalating violence that has shut out the possibility of peaceful negotiation... Many blacks have despaired of peaceful change. I have warned that when people become desperate, then they will use desperate methods."

Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu
Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu was one of the most effective activists against South African apartheid. He was born of Xhosa and Tswana parents at Klerksdorp in South Africa in 1931. He was educated in South African mission schools. His father was a respected schoolteacher but the family had little money and lived in a small shack without water or electricity. In 1936 the black South Africans' right to vote was abolished. From his family he learned tolerance and sympathy. I never learnt to hate , he said. When Desmond was twelve his family moved to Johannesburg where his father taught, and his mother cleaned and cooked at a school for the blind. Here Desmond learned compassion for the most underprivileged. It was here too, that he met Trevor Huddleston, the white parish priest in Sophiatown, a poor black settlement, who became his greatest mentor. Tutu says: One day I was standing in the street with my mother when a white man in a priest's clothing walked past. As he passed us he took off his hat to my mother. I couldn't believe my eyes - a white man who greeted a black working class woman!

HOME YOUR LIFE TOPICS PUBLICATIONS ... Presentation Speeches: Awarding Nobel Peace Prizes to the South African Laureates Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu Excerpts from the presentation speech by Egil Aarvik, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, 1984 "The contribution he has made, and is still making, represents a hope for the future, for the country's white minority as well as the black majority. Desmond Tutu is an exponent of the only form for conflict solving which is worthy of civilised nations. But, although he has never learnt to hate, none has opposed injustice with a more burning anger. Courageous and fearless he opposes his country's authorities. He is to be found at the front of the demonstration processions, regardless of the danger to his own life. His clear standpoints and his fearless attitude have made his name a unifying symbol for all groups of freedom campaigners in Africa. Desmond Tutu has shown that to campaign for the cause of peace is not a question of silent acceptance, but rather of arousing consciences and a sense of indignation, strengthening the will and inspiring the human spirit so that it recognises both its own value and its power of victory."
