HOME YOUR LIFE TOPICS PUBLICATIONS ... Background Information on the Nobel Square Laureates Desmond Mpilo Tutu Desmond Tutu was born in Klerksdorp, in 1931 and is the son of a schoolteacher and a domestic worker. The year 1958 was to prove a watershed year for Tutu. Following the introduction of what was formally known as Bantu education, Tutu decided to leave his teaching career and enter the ministry. Tutu attended St Peter's Theological College in Rosettenville where he received his Licentiate in Theology in 1960 and was ordained to the priesthood in Johannesburg in 1961. Subsequently he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to this new calling by furthering his studies at the University of London, United Kingdom, where he received his Bachelor of Divinity Honours and Master of Theology degrees whilst a part-time curate in a local parish. In 1967 he returned to South Africa and joined the staff of the Federal Theological Seminary in Alice and became chaplain at the University of Fort Hare. The year 1975 proved to be another important year in the life of Desmond Tutu as he was ordained the Dean of St Mary's Cathedral, Johannesburg, and was soon elected Bishop of Lesotho. In 1975, South Africa was on the brink of major political upheaval and it was in this environment that Tutu was appointed to the post of General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC). The SACC represented all the major Christian churches in South Africa, apart from the Dutch Reformed Church and the Catholic Church. Under Tutu's leadership and guidance, the SACC became a leading institution in South African spiritual and political life that gave voice to the ideals and aspirations of millions of Christians. The period between1978-1985 launched Tutu onto the national and international stage as the SACC was at the forefront of helping those who were disenfranchised by apartheid.

7 October 1931 - ? Archbishop Tutu is best known for his belief in the possibility of ultimate interracial harmony - a conviction that becomes a feat when considering his personal history.
In 1962, apartheid reached the church. White academics could no longer teach black clergymen, and black academics were needed to fill the gap. Tutu’s teaching experience, his two degrees, and his conscientiousness made him an ideal candidate for this duty, though he lacked a master’s degree. In order to fill this gap, he left South Africa in 1962 to pursue a master’s degree at King’s College at London University. ...Tutu reached religious prominence and was consecrated as the bishop of Lesotho... He returned to his homeland in 1967 and continued with his mission of teaching black clergy. In 1976, Tutu reached religious prominence and was consecrated as the bishop of Lesotho, an independent enclave within South Africa. The positive events in Tutu’s life were not matched by events at home. A month before his consecration, Soweto, a black community near South Africa’s capital, Johannesburg, exploded in violence as 15,000 schoolchildren took to the streets. They were angry that Afrikaans, instead of English - their typical language of instruction — would be used to teach some of their classes. More than 600 people were killed.

Klerksdorp is about 120 miles from Johannesburg, the richest city in South Africa. His family, like all other blacks in South Africa had very little money. They lived in a small shack where there was no electricity or sanitation. All black people had to carry passbooks and special identification. This included even his own father, a respected schoolteacher. The white police would sometimes stop black people on the street and demand to see papers. Even at a young age Desmond was upset by this and saw it as very unfair. As a child Tutu saw that not all whites were cruel. One day he met Father Trevor Huddleston, a white priest. This man would have a great influence on Desmond's life. When he was fourteen Desmond caught tuberculosis and almost died. He lay in a hospital bed among dying men for two years. Every day Father Huddleston came to talk to him. This inspired Tutu to a lifelong devotion to Christianity. In 1948 South Africa suffered a terrible disaster. An election was held. White South African citizens were the only ones allowed to vote. They elected the National Party to lead the country. This party was openly racist. They called for apartheid which means literally apart-hood and promised to introduce extreme anti-Black policies. While the rest of the world was making changes after World War II and the Holocaust, the South African white population was going in the opposite direction. The new party wasted no time in enacting new laws that made racial prejudice, segregation, and oppression the central focus of government policy.

Desmond Tutu - A Man with a Mission by Lindsay Miller Archbishop Desmond Tutu today stands as one of the most respected and influential men in South Africa, after having devoted much of his adult life fighting and defeating apartheid. However, Desmond Tutu was not always loved and respected. In fact, according to Nelson Mandela, this "outstanding patriot" was for years considered "public enemy number one" by the South African government (Tutu xi). Taking a close look at Desmond’s past, it is apparent that the church has affected every aspect of his life. Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on October 7, 1931 in the city of Klerksdorp (Baker, par.1). His name, Desmond stands for "courageous" (Bentley 14). Although his parents did not know it at the time, this name was perfect for their son. Desmond’s father, Zacharaih Tutu was an extremely strict and dominating man. His mother, Aletta, however was gentle and a peacemaker (Bentley 12). Her teachings had a significant influence on Desmond’s political and religious behavior. Desmond was the middle child with an older and younger sister (Bentley 15) Desmond began school at the age of seven. There were few education centers for South African black youths and those that existed were started by churches and required tuition (Bentley 19). Desmond attended Western High School (Moritz 419). In 1951, Desmond decided to go to Bantu Normal College to become a teacher (Tutu xiii; "Desmond" par.1). This was Desmond’s second choice, for he had hoped to study medicine but could not afford it (Baker, par.7). While at college, Desmond met Nomalizo Leah Shenxane (Bentley 35). In 1954, Desmond began teaching at Madibane High School. Leah, who was also a teacher, and Desmond were married the following year (Bentley 36).

Tutu did not return to South Africa until 1977, when he was asked to speak at the funeral of black activist Steven Biko, who died in police custody. Biko’s death was a turning point for Tutu, and he came to the conclusion that the church had to play a political role if apartheid was to be conquered without bloodshed.
