Rigoberta Menchu Tum in Denver
Rigoberta Menchu Tum will be in Denver today, speaking at the University of Denver Campus and receiving a Champion of Change Award from the Escuela Tlatelolco. The University of Denver talk will be at 1 p.m at Lindsay Auditorium. The Champions of Change Award Presentations will be at the Denver Botanic Gardens, beginning at 5 p.m.
Rigoberta Menchu Tum is a Quiche Mayan who won the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize on the strength of her advocacy for indigenous rights. She is also renowned for her book, "I, Rigoberta" which details the Guatemalan State repression and murder that was inflicted upon the Mayan communities. Rigoberta personifies the strength of indigenous peoples and their resiliency in withstanding State violence and we encourage people in the Denver area to come hear her speak. posted by Colorado AIM @ 9:39 AM

Her life has been dedicated to bringing peace and justice to her country, Guatemala, which has been ravaged by a civil war for 36 years. Rigoberta: Thank you.
Jamila: The first question is from the organization I*EARN. They would like to know: How has the struggle for your people changed since it began?
"I would say that it has changed many things, above all, because there existed an armed conflict here in Guatemala that had high costs." more...
Abeja: Earthharmony asks: How can we help the indigenous people in Central America from our homes in the United States? "Well, what you are doing is a way of helping in that you are not just sharing with us the good experiences that we have but also that people can know about our truth, our history." more...
Jamila: Now we have a question from Jeff in the state of Idaho. He wants to know in what project or work are you concentrating now and how can children help you and support you in this project? "Well, I believe that the biggest thing we are doing now is reconstructing Guatemala. We are relocating the refugees who were in Mexico, who are returning to Guatemala, we have built some houses, we have built some schools."

Question:
Thank you very much, we've gone beyond our schedule but we'd like to thank you for answering our questions.
I am the one that would like to thank you, first because we were a little bit nervous as this is the first time I've had the opportunity to talk on the Internet. It seems that, for us, the technology so far was only television and radio, but now is the first time I have the opportunity to give an interview on the Internet. I would like to excuse myself that I could not answer all your questions but you can count on me in that I give you all my heart and affection and best wishes. I know that you and the young people will triumph and help to correct all of the things that need to be addressed in this global world in which we live. Thank you very much.

Friday, November 22, 2002 Rigoberta Menchú Tum visits CSUN,
Santa Rosa Church By Maria Luisa Torres Rigoberta Menchú Tum is a diminutive woman and, at once, a heroic presence and tireless advocate for global peace and human rights. During a recent visit to Los Angeles, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate shared her message of peace with local college students and parishioners at Santa Rosa Church in San Fernando. "War does not change the state of humanity; we must say no to war with a resounding cry," Menchú told students at California State University Northridge during her Nov. 12 presentation "Code of Ethics for a Millennium of Peace." According to Menchú, widespread poverty, discrimination, inadequate health care, lack of educational opportunities, a shortage of food and potable water, and many other everyday injustices hinder true progress toward lasting equality and peace. For example, she noted, as many as 35,000 men, women and children die of starvation around the world every single day. "It's the poor who suffer the most," said Menchú, who also shared her gripping message and life story with Santa Rosa parishioners and residents of San Fernando during a one-day visit to the city on Nov. 15.

It was within this setting that the Tibetan Cultural and Community Service Center of Southern California (TCCSC) held what can be called one of the most unique nights in the Tibetan struggle. For one night, the Tibetan and Mayan communities met in Southern California. What the neighborhood lacked in riches, it more than made up in a wealth of warmth and hospitality - inviting the Center and the Tibetan community to it's community.
