Arne Tiselius-Father of Electrophoresis
Arne Wilhelm Kaurin Tiselius received the Nobel Prize in 1948 for his work on electrophoresis and absorption analysis and especially for his discovery of the complex nature of proteins in blood serum. Tiselius was appointed "docent" (assistant professor) in 1930. The chair in general and inorganic chemistry was expected to be vacated in 1936 through retirement, and Tiselius decided to direct his research interests into a field that would favor his candidacy. He developed an accurate quantitative method of measuring the diffusion of water vapor and other gases into zeolite crystals. He received a Rockefeller Fellowship and spent 2 years (1934-1935) in the United States at Princeton University in New Jersey. When he returned to Sweden, Tiselius discovered that another person had been appointed to the chair of inorganic chemistry at the University of Uppsala. In 1944, Tiselius was asked by the Swedish government to become a member of a committee to recommend measures for improving research in the sciences. This committee's recommendations led to the establishment of the Swedish Natural Science Research Council. Tiselius also became associated with the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. He was asked to join a committee that resulted in the formation of the Swedish National Society for Cancer Research. He also served as president of the Nobel Foundation and developed the Nobel Symposia for each of the 5 Nobel Prize fields.

American chemist noted for establishing physical methods for determining organic molecular structure and his contributions to synthetic organic chemistry, his effectiveness in translating scientific knowledge into technological practice, and his efforts to promote international scientific cooperation. His research is in such diverse fields as chemistry of steroids; structure of alkaloids, antibiotics and terpenoids; synthesis of drugs, particularly antihistamines, oral contraceptives, and anti-inflammatory agents; optical rotatory dispersion studies, organic mass spectrometry, and magnetic circular diehroism of organic compounds. He has lectured extensively on birth control issues, and holds U.S. patent No. 2,744,122 for an oral contraceptive - the birth control pill. Baruj Benacerraf

Born 29 Oct 1920
Venezuelan-born American immunologist who studied the mechanisms and genetic basis of the immunologic response and especially of its role in certain diseases known as the autoimmune diseases. He received a share (with George Snell and Jean Dausset) of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Benacerraf showed that genetic factors intimately related to the genes that determine an individual's unique constitution of H antigens actually regulate the interaction among the various cells belonging to the immunological system and are thereby important to the strength of an immunological reaction. He studied the guinea pig's ability to mobilize an immune response against a certain antigen as determined by genetic factors (Ir or immune response) genes.

AUGUST 10 - BIRTHS Wolfgang Paul
(source)
Born 10 Aug 1913; died 6 Dec 1993
German physicist developed the Paul trap, an electromagnetic device that captures ions and holds them long enough for study and precise measurement of their properties. During the 1950s he developed the so-called Paul trap as a means of confining and studying electrons. The device consists of three electrodes - two end caps and an encircling ring. The ring is connected to an oscillating potential. The direction of the electric field alternates; for half the time the electron is pushed from the caps to the ring and for the other half it is pulled from the ring and pushed towards the caps. For his work he shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physics with Hans G. Dehmelt and Norman F. Ramsey. Leo Fender
(source)
Born 10 Aug 1909; died 21 Mar 1991.
American inventor and manufacturer of electronic musical instruments, including the first solid-body electric guitar to be mass-produced: the Fender Broadcaster (1948, renamed the Telecaster two years later). He was an electronics enthusiast and radio repairman who got involved with guitar design after guitar-playing customers kept bringing him their external pickups for repair. Before Fender came along, guitarists met their amplification needs by attaching pickups to the surface of their hollow-bodied instruments. The Stratocaster (1954), had a flashier, contoured, double-cutaway body, with three (as opposed to two) single-coil pickups and a revolutionary string-bending (tremolo) unit. It became a much favored model of rock guitarists.

Arne Tiselius
Arne Wilhelm Kaurin Tiselius Stockholm 10 August Uppsala 29 October ... biochemist He was born in Stockholm . Following the death of his father, the family moved to Gothenburg where he went to school, and after graduation at the local "Realgymnasium" in , he studied at the University of Uppsala , specializing in chemistry . He became research assistant in The Svedberg's laboratory in and obtained his doctor's degree in on the moving-boundary method of studying the electrophoresis of proteins . From then to he published a number of papers on diffusion and adsorption in naturally occurring base-exchanging zeolites , and these studies were continued during a year's visit to H.S. Taylor 's laboratory in Princeton with support of a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship . On his return to Uppsala he resumed his interest in proteins, and the application of physical methods to biochemical problems. This lead to a much improved method of electrophoretic analysis which he improved in subsequent years. Tiselius took an active part in the reorganization of scientific research in Sweden in the years following World War II , and was President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry He was married, with two children. He died
