Tinbergen was one of the founding fathers of modern ethology. At Leiden he developed laboratory work, in which the three-spined stickleback proved a particularly successful experimental animal, and field studies initiating projects on wasps, butterflies and the hobby (bird of prey). His work on the breeding behaviour of herring gulls also dates from this period and, like the stickleback research, became one of the classics of ethology. He spent the spring of 1937 working with K.Z. Lorenz at Altenberg near Vienna, an association that was to have the greatest importance for their science. After the move to Oxford, Tinbergen built up a research group that had a profound influence on the development of ethology round the world. In particular, his research focused on the adaptedness of behaviour; the work on the herring gull initiated in the Netherlands developed into comparative studies of many gull species. His most influential book, The Study of Instinct , appeared in 1951 and he also wrote books for the educated layman and made scientific films such as the Italia Prize winner 'Signals for Survival' (1969). Tinbergen became increasingly preoccupied with the implications of the ethological approach for man, and in retirement he and his wife collaborated on a study of childhood autism publishing

Tinbergen, Nikolaas
Dutch-born British zoologist who specialized in the study of instinctive behaviour. One of the founders of ethology, the scientific study of animal behaviour in natural surroundings, he shared a Nobel prize 1973 with Konrad Lorenz (with whom he worked on several projects) and Karl von Frisch
Tinbergen investigated other aspects of animal behaviour, such as learning, and also studied human behaviour, particularly aggression, which he believed to be an inherited instinct that developed when humans changed from being predominantly herbivorous to being hunting carnivores.
Tinbergen was born in The Hague and educated at Leiden, where he became professor 1947. From 1949 he was in the UK at Oxford, and established a school of animal-behaviour studies there.
In The Study of Instinct 1951, Tinbergen showed that the aggressive behaviour of the male three-spined stickleback is stimulated by the red coloration on the underside of other males (which develops during the mating season). He also demonstrated that the courtship dance of the male is stimulated by the sight of the swollen belly of a female that is ready to lay eggs.
In The Herring Gull's World 1953, Tinbergen described the social behaviour of gulls, emphasizing the importance of stimulus-response processes in territorial behaviour.

Studies of the display behavior of certain species revealed that such displays result from a state of conflict between opposite motivations ("fight or flee"). Further work clarified the evolutionary origins of many social signals and their subsequent ritualization. Tinbergen emphasized the mutual interaction between predator and prey and, as scientific adviser to the Serengeti Research Institute in Tanzania, applied this approach to African plains game. His best-known books are The Study of Instinct The Herring Gull's World (1953, rev. ed. 1961). Niko Tinbergen
ethology - animal behaviour
Niko Tinbergen (Nikolaas Tinbergen) was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on 15th April 1907, as the third of five children to a schoolmaster and his wife. At school he was by no means notable for scholarship preferring to indulge in appreciating nature through diverse rambles by beach and by lakeside and also preferring to play field-sports.
As a boy he took a great interest in two small freshwater aquaria located in the backyard of the family home and was also made responsible, by one of his teachers at High School, for three saltwater aquaria. Alongside these practical involvements he also appreciatively read the works of two famous Dutch naturalists - E. Heimans and Jac P. Thijsse.
He was initially rather daunted by any prospect of studying academic biology at university level but, through the influence of friends who took him to wild coastal places full of migratory wildfowl, his interest was reinvigorated such that he resolved to attempt studies in Biology at Leiden University. Here he again seemed to be relatively unremakable as a scholar and only scraped through the final assessment that led up to his being awarded a Ph.D. in 1932.
Through a friend named Sidney Van den Bergh, he was offered the opportunity of joining the Netherlands' small contingent for the International Polar Year 1932-33, which was to have its base in Angmagssalik, the homeland of a small, isolated Eskimo tribe and he, together with the wife he had recently married, lived for two summers and a winter lived in close proximity to these Eskimos. This was followed by a minor academic post at Leiden where he was given responsibility for teaching comparative anatomy to undergraduates and for the organisation of a course in animal behaviour.

Nikolaas Tinbergen was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on April 15, 1907. As a young boy, he was not interested in academics, neither high school nor college, so he scraped by, doing just enough to pass. He spent much of his time just observing the abundant wildlife in their natural habitat of Holland. Opposed to attending college, Niko's father sent him to spend time with a famous experimental biologist, Professor J. Thienemann who shared with him "the massive autumn migration of birds, the wild Moose, and the famous Wanderdünen." ( Tinbergen, 1975). Soon after returning to Holland, Tinbergen made the decision to study biology at Leiden University. After he completed his years there, he became engaged to Elisabeth Rutten. Knowing that he would have to soon support this woman, he decided to use his chance study of Beewolves (digger wasps)and their remarkable homing abilities. Next, he and his new wife left with a small group from the Netherlands for two years to live with a small isolated Eskimo tribe in Angmagssalik. Upon his return to Holland, Niko took a minor instructor's job where he was to teach comparative anatomy and to organize a course in animal behavior for undergraduates. He engaged in a lot of fieldwork and further studies on Beewolves, insects, and birds at this time, and he made his famous observation of stickleback courtship. Tinbergen developed a lifelong habit of carefully observing animals in their natural environment. It has been through the work of Niko Tinbergen that the study of Ethology has gained much respect and legitimacy.
