Established after changes to premiums made in 1911, for papers on practical applications of electricity.
Ayrton, W E (1847-1908) An outstanding teacher of electrical subjects, often using apparatus he had made himself. Appointed the first Professor of Natural Philosophy and Telegraphy at the Imperial College of Engineering, Tokyo in 1873. He became Professor of Electrical Engineering at Finsbury Technical College in 1879 and in 1884 became Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Central Technical College, eventually becoming Dean in 1904. In Tokyo, Ayrton, with John Perry, worked on dialectic constants of gases; viscosities of dialectics and at Finsbury they invented many electrical measuring instruments, including a spiral-spring ammeter and wattmeter. They also worked on railway electrification and produced a dynometer, and in 1882 the first electric tricycle. He was President of the IEE in 1892.

Sir Joseph John Thomson was born in 1856 in Manchester, England, of Scottish parentage. He studied engineering at Owen's College, Manchester, and moved on to the University of Cambridge. In 1884 he became professor of experimental physics. One of his students was Ernest Rutherford, who would later succeed him in the post. Influenced by the work of James Clerk Maxwell, and the discovery of the X-ray, he deduced the existence of "corpuscles" or electrons. His discovery was made known in 1897, and caused a sensation in scientific circles, eventually resulting in his being awarded a Nobel prize (1906). Prior to the outbreak of World War I, he made another ground-breaking discovery: the isotope. In 1918, he became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. He died in 1940 and is buried in Westminster Abbey, close to Isaac Newton.

Blue Plaques Details
The names of some recipients of IOP funded 'blue' plaques are listed below in several ways. An accompanying page gives detailed information about the recipients. Ideally these pages should have a photgraph of the plaque, a portrait of the individual and links to website where further information can be found. Further blue plaques are in the process of being installed, they will be added to the list later.
Please let the webeditor know of any errors or omissions in these pages. I should particularly like a photograph and an OS Grid Ref for each plaque, if there is one near you please take its picture and send me a copy of the print or image.
Names are accessible in several ways: In both lists, click on the name to move directly to the details for that person.
Names in Surname order
Notes:
  • People who were ennobled may be in this list more than once, for example, Lord Kelvin can be found under 'K' and 'T' for his original name of William Thomson.
  • People with more than one plaque have more than one 'unveiled' date.

Thomson, Sir Joseph John (1856-1940).

Joseph Larmor 's father was Hugh Larmor and his mother was Anna Wright. Anna Wright was the daughter of Joseph Wright, and Joseph Larmor was named after his maternal grandfather. Hugh Larmor was a farmer at the time Joseph was born but he gave up farming when Joseph was around six or seven years old to become a trader with a grocer's shop in Belfast. Joseph was the eldest of a large family. By the time Joseph was of an age to attend school, his parents had moved to Belfast so it was in that city that he attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. At this time he was [1]:- A shy, delicate and precocious boy ... After leaving school, Larmor continued his education in Belfast, studying for his B.A. and M.A. at Queen's University, Belfast. In 1877, having graduated from the Queen's University, he went to St John's College, Cambridge, where he studied the Mathematical Tripos. In 1880 he graduated as Senior Wrangler (the top First Class student) and he was first Smith's prizeman. It is interesting to note that J J Thomson, who like Larmor would make an important contribution to the understanding of the electron, was Second Wrangler (taking second place in the Mathematical Tripos examinations to Larmor).
