George Paget Thomson was born in 1892 at Cambridge, the son of the late Sir J J. Thomson (then Professor of Physics at Cambridge University), a Nobel Prize winner who, more than anyone else, was responsible for the discovery of the electron, and Rose Elisabeth Paget, daughter of the late Sir George Paget, Regius Professor of Medicine at Cambridge.
George Thomson went to school in Cambridge, and then up to the University. As an undergraduate at Trinity College he took mathematics followed by physics, and had done a year's research under his father when the 1914-1918 war broke out.
He joined the Queen's Regiment of Infantry as a Subaltern and served for a short time in France, but returned to work on the stability of aeroplanes and other aerodynamical problems at Farnborough, and continued to work on this kind of problem at various establishments throughout the war, apart from eight months in the United States attached to the British War Mission.
After the war he spent three years as Fellow and Lecturer at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and continued his research on physics. He was then appointed Professor of Natural Philosophy (as physics is called in Scotland) at the University of Aberdeen, a post he held for eight years. At Aberdeen he carried out experiments on the behaviour of electrons going through very thin films of metals, which showed that electrons behave as waves in spite of being particles. For this work he later shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with C.J. Davisson of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, who had arrived at the same conclusions by a different kind of experiment. The process of electron diffraction which these experiments established to be possible has been widely used in the investigation of the surfaces of solids.

Thomson in 1928), and various biographical accounts of Thomson and the discovery of the electron, several by his son.

Thomson, George Paget
English physicist whose work on interference phenomena in the scattering of electrons by crystals helped to confirm the wavelike nature of particles. He shared a Nobel prize 1937.
In the USA, C J Davisson made the same discovery independently, earlier the same year, using a different method.
He was born and educated at Cambridge, the son of physicist J J Thomson. His first professorship was 1922-30 at Aberdeen, moving to Imperial College, London, 1930-52. During World War II, Thomson headed many government committees, including one concerned with atomic weapons.
During the mid-1920s, Thomson carried out a series of experiments hoping to verify French physicist Louis de Broglie's hypothesis that electrons possess duality, acting both as particles and as waves. The experiment involved bombarding very thin metal (aluminium, gold, and platinum) and celluloid foils with a narrow beam of electrons. The beam was scattered into a series of rings. Applying mathematical formulas to measurements of the rings, together with a knowledge of the crystal lattice, Thomson showed in 1927 that all the readings were in complete agreement with de Broglie's theory.

    Sir Joseph John Thomson
Sir Joseph John Thomson, b. Dec. 18, 1856, d. Aug. 30, 1940, is universally recognized as the British scientist who discovered and identified the electron. At the age of 27 he succeeded (1884) Lord Rayleigh as professor of physics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was named director of its Cavendish Laboratory in the same year, continuing in that position until 1919. Thomson demonstrated (1897) that cathode rays were actually units of electrical current made up of negatively charged particles of subatomic size. He believed them to be an integral part of all matter and theorized a model of atomic structure in which a quantity of negatively charged electrons was embedded in a sphere of positive electricity, the two charges neutralizing each other. For these investigations he won (1906) the Nobel Prize for physics; in 1908 he was knighted. Subsequently, Thomson turned his attention to positively charged ions. His research showed that neon gas was made up of a combination of two different types of ions, each with a different charge, or mass, or both. He did this by using magnetic and electric fields to deflect the stream of positive ions of neon gas onto two different parts of a photographic plate. This demonstration clearly pointed to the possibility that ordinary elements might exist as isotopes (varieties of atoms of the same element, which have the same atomic number but differ in mass).
