Sir Joseph John Thomson Sir Joseph John Thomson 18 December 30 August ), often known as J. J. Thomson , was an English physicist , the discoverer of the electron Thomson was born in near Manchester in England , of Scottish parentage. He studied engineering at Owen's College, Manchester, and moved on to Trinity College, Cambridge . In he became Cavendish Professor of Physics . In 1890 he married Rose Paget, and he had two children with her. One of his students was Ernest Rutherford , who would later succeed him in the post. Influenced by the work of James Clerk Maxwell , and the discovery of the X-ray , he deduced that cathode rays (see cathode ray tube ), because they exhibited a single charge-to-mass ratio e/m , must be composed of a single type of negatively charged particle. He called these particles "corpuscles." The term electron had been proposed earlier, by G. Johnstone Stoney, as a fixed quantum of electric charge in electrochemistry , but Thomson realised that it was also a subatomic particle , the first one to be discovered. His discovery was made known in

After a brief service in France , he worked on aerodynamics at Farnborough and elsewhere. In , Thomson married Kathleen Buchanan Smith, daughter of the Very Rev. Sir George Adam Smith . They had four children, two sons and two daughters. Kathleen died in After serving in the first world war Thomson followed in his father's footsteps working first at Cambridge and then Aberdeen and was himself jointly (with Clinton Joseph Davisson ) awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in for his work in discovering the wave-like properties of the electron . Where his father had seen the electron as a particle (and won his nobel prize in the process) Thomson demonstrated that it could be diffracted like a wave, a discovery proving the principle of wave-particle duality which had first been posited by Louis-Victor de Broglie in the twenties as what is often dubbed the de Broglie hypothesis In the late thirties and during the second world war Thomson specialised in nuclear physics , concentrating on practical military applications. In later life he continued this work on nuclear energy but also wrote works on

American paleontologist , evolutionary biologist, and science writer who grew up in New York City. He graduated from Antioch College and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1967. Since then he has been Professor of Geology and Zoology at Harvard University. He considers himself primarily a palaeontologist and an evolutionary biologist, though he teaches geology and the history of science as well. A frequent and popular speaker on the sciences, his published work includes both scholarly study and many prize-winning popular collections of essays. Maxie Anderson Born 10 Sep 1934; died 27 Jun 1983.
Maxie Leroy "Max" Anderson was an aviator and balloonist who (with fellow Albuquerque, NM, residents Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman) made the first transatlantic balloon flight aboard their Double Eagle II balloon, 3108 miles from Presque Isle, Maine to Miserey, France. After a dozen failed attempts, their successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by gas balloon was achieved 11-16 August 1978, (landing 17 Aug), setting a new duration record with a flight time of 137 hours. Two years later, 12-18 May 1980, with his son Kristian, he made the first nonstop balloon flight across North America. This record helium balloon flight aboard the Kitty Hawk began at San Francisco, California, lasted four days and ended near Matane, Quebec, Canada, 3,100 miles from their launch site. His later round-the-world attempts failed. He was killed in 1983 when refused permission to fly across the East German border and a faulty release clamp used at landing caused them to crash.

GEORGE PAGET THOMSON
George Paget Thomson was born in 1892 at Cambridge, the son of the late Sir J. J. Thomson (then Professor of Physics at Cambridge University ), a Nobel Prize winner who, more than anyone else, was responsible for the discovery of the electron, and Rose Elisabeth Paget, daughter of the late Sir George Paget, Regius Professor of Medicine at Cambridge. George Thomson went to school in Cambridge, and then up to the University. As an undergraduate at Trinity College he took mathematics followed by physics, and had done a year's research under his father when the I9I4-I9I8 war broke out. He joined the Queen's Regiment of Infantry as a Subaltern and served for a short time in France, but returned to work on the stability of aeroplanes and other aerodynamical problems at Farnborough, and continued to work on this kind of problem at various establishments throughout the war, apart from eight months in the United States attached to the British War Mission. After the war he spent three years as Fellow and Lecturer at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge

Mimo jiné Thomson publikoval práce z oblasti geometrie elektronogramù a lomu elektronù.
