George Paget Thomson
George Paget Thomson ), British physicist and son of Nobel Prize winning physicist J. J. Thomson Thomson read mathematics and physics at Trinity College, Cambridge , until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, when he joined the Queen's Regiment of Infantry . After a brief service in France , he worked on aerodynamics at Farnborough and elsewhere. In , Thomson married Kathleen Buchanan Smith, daughter of the Very Rev. Sir George Adam Smith . They had four children, two sons and two daughters. Kathleen died in After serving in the first world war Thomson followed in his father's footsteps working first at Cambridge and then Aberdeen and was himself jointly (with Clinton Joseph Davisson ) awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in for his work in discovering the wave-like properties of the electron . Where his father had seen the electron as a particle (and won his nobel prize in the process) Thomson demonstrated that it could be diffracted like a wave, a discovery proving the principle of wave-particle duality which had first been posited by Louis-Victor de Broglie in the twenties as what is often dubbed the de Broglie hypothesis In the late thirties and during the second world war Thomson specialised in nuclear physics , concentrating on practical military applications. In later life he continued this work on nuclear energy but also wrote works on

BIOGRAPHY SCOPE AND CONTENT OF THE PAPERS CONDITIONS OF ACCESS AND USE Back to RSLP Project BIOGRAPHY 'J.J.' Thomson was one of the foremost physicists of his day. His name is principally remembered for the discovery of the electron and for his work on gaseous exchanges. Early years Joseph John Thomson was born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester on 18 December 1856. His father, Joseph James Thomson, was an antiquarian bookseller and publisher and his mother Emma Thomson (nèe Swindells) came from a branch of the local Vernon family who owned a cotton spinning company. Thomson was originally intended for an engineering apprenticeship. However, because of a long waiting list, he enrolled at Owens College in Manchester in 1871 (later University of Manchester) where he studied engineering, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Thomson had given up any thought of a career in engineering by the time he left Owens College in 1876.

Thomson, Sir Joseph John
English physicist who discovered the electron 1897. His work inaugurated the electrical theory of the atom, and his elucidation of positive rays and their application to an analysis of neon led to the discovery of isotopes. Nobel prize 1906.
Using magnetic and electric fields to deflect positive rays, Thomson found in 1912 that ions of neon gas are deflected by different amounts, indicating that they consist of a mixture of ions with different charge-to-mass ratios. English chemist Frederick Soddy had earlier proposed the existence of isotopes and Thomson proved this idea correct when he identified, also in 1912, the isotope neon-22. This work was continued by his student Frederick Aston.
Thomson was born near Manchester and studied there and at Cambridge, where he spent his entire career. As professor of experimental physics 1884-1918, he developed the Cavendish Laboratory into the world's leading centre for subatomic physics. His son was George Paget Thomson
Investigating cathode rays, Thomson proved that they were particulate and found their charge-to-mass ratio to be constant and with a value nearly 1,000 times smaller than that obtained for hydrogen ions in liquid electrolysis. He also measured the charge of the cathode-ray particles and found it to be the same in the gaseous discharge as in electrolysis. Thus he demonstrated that cathode rays are fundamental, negatively charged particles; the term 'electron' was introduced later.
