(Joseph John) Thomson Library of Congress [b. Chetham Hill, England, December 18, 1856, d. Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 30, 1940] In 1897 Thomson proved that a cathode ray consists of equal-mass particles that respond to both electric and magnetic fields. The particle mass is that of the smallest mass change during ionization, much smaller than a hydrogen atom. The tiny charged particle Thomson had identified was the electron. Thomson also made the first version of a mass spectrometer (a device that separates ions by mass) and used it to find two isotopes of neon, physical proof that isotopes, then only suspected in radioactive decay, exist. Administrative/Biographical History
Thomson was born into a family of great scientific distinction. His father, Sir Joseph Thomson, 'J.J.', was one of the foremost physicists of the day and a great influence on him. Thomson, 'G.P.' as he was always known, was educated at the Perse School and Trinity College, Cambridge where he read mathematics and physics. He then began research at the Cavendish Laboratory under his father's supervision, and was elected Fellow and Mathematical Lecturer at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1914. After a period of service in France with The Queen's Regiment he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps at the Royal Aircraft Factory (later Establishment), 1915-1919.
Scope and Content
The papers are extensive and cover many aspects of Thomson's career and research. They include his unpublished autobiography, school and undergraduate notebooks, notebooks, drafts and photographs documenting his work on electron diffraction, manuscript notes and drafts on thermonuclear research, extensive notes and drafts for talks and writings on the history and social aspects of science, and also material relating to Thomson's involvement with the Voluntary Euthanasia Society. Unfortunately the full range of his correspondence (including that on electron diffraction) has not survived.

Enjoy reading a few interesting facts about some of the Nobel Laureates in Physics!
  • Pierre and Marie Curie are the first and only husband and wife to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics (in 1903). Marie Curie was also awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. The Curie's younger daughter, Eve, married American diplomat Henry R. Labouisse. As Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Labouisse received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1965 on behalf of UNICEF. Marie Curie is only one of two women to ever receive the Nobel Prize in Physics. (The second being Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963.) Sir Joseph John (J.J.) Thomson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 and his son, Sir George Paget Thomson, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937. Sir William Henry Bragg and his son, Sir William Lawrence Bragg, both received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. The Bragg's are the first and only father/son team to have jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physics. William Lawrence Bragg was awarded the Nobel Prize at the age of 25, and as of yet he is still the youngest-ever laureate.
