This is a tribute to the American Cancer Society's Research Program and the strength of its peer-review process. These scientists range from James Watson, PhD, whose discovery with Francis Crick, MD, of the structure of DNA was the cornerstone of modern molecular biology to E. Donnall Thomas, MD, the father of bone marrow transplantation. The most recent Society-supported grantee to be awarded the Nobel Prize (2004) are Irwin A. Transplant Timeline
By Cynthia M Piccolo And because in transplantation, different organs encounter different problems, in addition to presenting the entire history of organ transplant here, we have also created individual timelines from it for: 400 BCE to First century CE: First skin grafts/flaps for facial reconstruction: In the work Samhita , Indian author Sushruta describes reconstruction of noses and ear lobes using skin grafts from the cheek. (Early research dates Samhita a from about 600 BCE, but modern historians dispute this date, giving a date of 400 BCE to 1st century CE.) Dutchman Job van Meeneren documents the use of a bone graft from a dog's skull to repair a defect in a human cranium. A bone from a dog is reportedly used to repair the skull of an injured Russian aristocrat (who is later said to have had the bone removed because of threats of excommunication from the church). 1822: First Skin Transplant (autograft): Samhita (c. 400 BCE) was theoretical.

Open Statement on Vaccines We invite medical and public health practitioners to endorse the Open Statement on Vaccines. To do so, please submit our online signatory response form or download a printable form that you can fax. We, the undersigned , support immunization as the safest, most effective way to control and eradicate infectious diseases. Infectious diseases were once prevalent in the United States, inflicting widespread suffering and death on young and old, rich and poor alike. Deadly diseases such as smallpox, polio, diphtheria and measles have, for the most part, become distant memories. Most of the credit goes to vaccines, medical miracles that many take for granted. Vaccination eradicated smallpox but the other diseases still exist. Without immunization, they quickly can return and cause widespread harm, as the examples below demonstrate. Although there are extremely rare instances of serious adverse reactions to vaccines, vaccines have a demonstrated record of safety and are held to the highest standard. Vaccines are rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness before licensure by the Food and Drug Administration, and their safety and purity are continuously monitored.

Sexyloops' Book Review Fly Fishing - by E. Donnall Thomas It would be easy to miss this book. Most of us have more books about fly-fishing than are really good for us, and this one's somewhat prosaic title is unlikely to catch the eye of anyone whose shelves are already bulging with Clarke, Gierach, McGuane, Skues and their many partners in fishy crime. But it would be a terrible shame to pass this one by. A casual glance at this book might confirm it to be the usual fish pornography – more torrid descriptions of epic battles, accompanied by pictures of tanned, good-looking men and women holding improbably bent rods and enormous fish. But dig deeper and you'll discover that not even the best pornography is this interesting. For sure, you will learn all about the sorts of fish that you can catch in these places. In short, this is not merely a book about the relentless pursuit and capture of fish - instead, it is a truly affectionate, insightful and entertaining look at what flyfishing is really all about. I came away from reading it with a powerful urge to go fishing with the author more or less anywhere, in the knowledge that fish or none, I would learn something new and fascinating about them and their world. That, for me, has always been the test of a truly worthy writer. In the meantime, I'll have to make do with more of his excellent books. – Sean Geer Sean Geer ( sean@fishmail.co.uk

Looking Back on 25 Years of Achievement
In 1976, a young college student diagnosed with a life-threatening form of cancer traveled across the country to City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte, California, where he was offered the opportunity to receive treatment in the Center’s newly established Bone Marrow Transplantation Program. Because his prognosis was so poor, this young man believed the highly investigational HCT procedure might be his only hope for survival. That courageous young man, Mushtaque Jivani, was the sixth patient transplanted at City of Hope in 1976. One year later, Mushtaque celebrated the first anniversary of his transplantation by sharing a cake with the HCT Program’s three physicians and six nurses. His survival—the first at City of Hope—was a landmark occasion, symbolizing enormous hope in the battle against cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Since 1976, City of Hope’s HCT Program has grown from a three-bed unit to a 50-bed inpatient and outpatient facility with more than 20 physicians and 100 nurses. Since the program’s inception, City of Hope has performed more than 5,000 transplants, treating patients with nearly 30 different potentially life-threatening, malignant and nonmalignant diseases. City of Hope is the largest provider of HCT in California and one of the largest and most successful HCT research and treatment centers in the world. Due to the research and treatment efforts of City of Hope and other leading cancer centers, HCT is now considered the standard of care for numerous malignancies.
