,,Richard Axel és Linda Bruck osztozhat az idei orvostudományi Nobel-díjon. A két amerikai kutató a szaglórendszerünk mûködésének leírása terén végzett úttörõ munkájáért érdemelte ki a díjat és a vele járó, összesen 10 millió svéd koronás jutalmat. A szaglás hosszú idõn keresztül az egyik legkevésbé ismert érzékelésünk volt. Pedig kétségkívül létfontosságú funkciójú: az állatvilágban segít a zsákmányállat követésében, a megfelelõ táplálék kiválasztásában, a potenciális szexuális partner megtalálásában vagy a fejletlen újszülött emlõsnek anyja megtalálásában. Az ember számára a szaglás szintén döntõ a romlott táplálék illetve egyéb vészhelyzetek (tûz, mérgezés) felismerésében.
Az ember mintegy 10 ezer szagféleség megkülönböztetésére képes, ám hogy az egyes szagokat hogyan azonosítjuk, ez a közelmúltig nem volt ismert. Richard Axel és Linda Bruck e téren végzett úttörõmunkát. A két kutató 1991-ben egér kísérletek segítségével együtt fejtette meg szaglásunk bonyolult mûködését. Bár már nem együtt, ám azóta is mindketten a szaglás terén végeznek kutatásokat, gyakran párhuzamosan ugyanarra az eredményre jutva. Az 58 éves Richard Axel a New York-i Columbia Egyetem professzora, míg az 57 éves Linda B.Buck a seattle-i Fred Hutchinson Rákkutató Központ kutatója....''

Axel Hugo Theodor Theorell July 6 August 15 ) was a Swedish scientist and Nobel Prize laureate in medicine. He was born in Linköping as the son of Thure Theorell and his wife Armida Bill. Theorell went to Secondary School in Linköping and passed his examination there on May 23 . In September, he began to study medicine at the Karolinska Institute and in he graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine. He then spent three months studying bacteriology at the Pasteur Institute in Paris under Professor Albert Calmette . In he obtained his M.D. degree with a theory on the lipids of the blood plasma, and was appointed professor in physiological chemistry at the Karolinska Institute. Theorell, who dedicated his entire career to enzyme research, received the
