http://www.icp.ucl.ac.be/report95/thei1.html
Persistence of Theiler's virus in the central nervous system of the mouse
In the course of his studies on yellow fever virus, Max Theiler isolated a new picornavirus from a mouse suffering from hind legs paralysis. This virus and several related isolates are referred to as Theiler's virus (or Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus "TMEV"). TMEV generally produces an asymptomatic infection. It replicates in the intestinal tract of the mouse and spreads by the feco-oral route. The virus sometimes reaches the Central Nervous System (CNS) of the mouse and induces, according to the viral strain, either a fatal encephalitis or a chronic demyelinating disease. In the laboratory, the disease can be systematically reproduced by intracerebral inoculation of the virus. Persistent strains of Theiler's virus cause a typical biphasic disease. The early disease is a sub-lethal encephalitis that occurs during the first week following inoculation. At this stage, the virus is found in the grey matter (mostly neurons) of the brain and, to a lesser extent, of the spinal cord. After 15 to 20 days, the virus disappears from the grey matter and appears almost exclusively in the white matter of the spinal cord. Once there, the virus persists for over a year in macrophages, in microglial cells, in oligodendrocytes, the myelin forming cells, and in astrocytes. Foci of infected glial cells are associated with a strong inflammatory response and with primary demyelination of many axons. These lesions resemble closely active plaques of multiple sclerosis in man. Throughout the late disease, the virus persists in spite of a specific humoral and cellular immune response.

Flavivirus

'''Yellow fever''' (also called '''black vomit''' or sometimes '''The American Plague''') is an acute viral disease. It is still an important cause of hemorrhage illness in several Africa n and South America n countries despite existence of an effective vaccine . In the past it was a source of several devastating epidemics.
The disease is caused by an arbovirus of the family '' Flaviviridae '', and is one of the smallest RNA viruses isolated from man.
Mosquito
s are the primary in transmission of the disease from forest monkey s to man and in man-to-man transmission. The mosquitos involved are '' Aedes simpsoni Aedes africanus '', and '' Aedes aegypti '' in Africa; and the '' Haemagogus '' and '' Sabethes '' genera.
The course of the disease varies from an unapparent infection to an intense feverish illness with high mortality rate. There is a difference between disease outbreaks in rural or forest areas and in towns. Disease outbreaks in towns and non-native people are usually more serious.
After a 3 to 6 day incubation period the typical symptoms that arise are fever , muscle aches, headache and backache. Other symptoms may include a red tongue, flushed face, and reddening of the eyes. In a proportion of cases there is also involvement of internal organs -
