Mission Statement Description The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service. Its work is based on the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) belief in the worth of every person, and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice. Founded in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian victims during World War I, today the AFSC has programs that focus on issues related to economic justice, peace-building and demilitarization, social justice, and youth, in the United States, and in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and at the United Nations (Geneva and New York). AFSC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947 for its contributions to global peace and justice.

Cambridge, MA www.afsc.org Keith Harvey, Executive Director Critical Breakdown - American Friends Service Committee SPECIAL PROJECT 2003 Critical Breakdown is promoting young people as powerful resources for creative new solutions to problems affecting their own lives and communities. It is a place where they can explore new solutions to the conflicts they experience and a place where class, gender, race, sexual orientation, age and other identifications are viewed not as marks of division but as windows to a full and broad range of perspectives on life. As an alcohol-and drug-free open microphone venue where inner-city, low income, marginalized young people explore themes of social activism, political consciousness, and non-violence, Critical Breakdown uses socially conscious performance art such as hip hop, spoken word, and dance to attract a diverse group of young people. They also focus on leadership development and outreach to Boston youth who are underserved by more traditional youth programs. They currently serve over 200 young people each month, mostly from Boston’s neighborhoods of Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roxbury and the South End. Based on a belief in the dignity and worth of every human being as conceived by the American Friends Service Committee, Critical Breakdown embraces this ideal and fosters the development of young people to examine their experiences with injustice and violence, encourage youth to see themselves as powerful agents of change and to build trust and respect between and among different neighborhoods, races, ethnicities and class groups. If you like their work, they need your support to continue. Please give.

American Friends Service Committee, Tokyo, e_report#8, June 2001 Dear friends:
The situation in East Asia has changed considerably since we moved to Japan
three years ago. After several years of cautious optimism, we are watching
as the new U.S. administration presses forward with a new hard-line policy.
For an analysis of the new Bush policy in East Asia, please see Karin Lee's
essay on our website (http://www.afsc.org/intl/asia/eastasia.htm)
In the midst of the Bush administration's unilateral zeal, there have still
been positive developments. In South Korea, progress continues to be made
on addressing the impact of US troops in Korea. Fourteen Korean villagers
living in Maehyang-ri, next to the US Air Force Kooni training range, filed
a lawsuit seeking damages for harm and injuries suffered due to proximity to bombing practice. In April 2001, a Seoul court decided in their favor. Although the Court holds the Korean government not the US military liable for the modest settlement of approximately $100,000, the practices of US

Notes
The AFSC National Youth and Militarism Program works to reduce the impacts of war and military institutions on young people's lives. We aim to halt the growing influence of the military in US schools and help students and educators work for peace and better education in their communities. We also support those who refuse to participate in militarism and work to expand every person's right to walk away from war and violence.
