American Friends Service Committee
Since its founding in 1917, when it gave American Quaker conscientious objectors a means of aiding civilian victims of World War I, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has remained, in the words of its mission statement, “a practical expression of the faith of the Religious Society of Friends. Committed to the principles of nonviolence and justice, it seeks in its work and witness to draw on the transforming power of love, human and divine.” Much of the AFSC’s effectiveness is based on its recognition that “the leadings of the Spirit and the principles of truth found through Friends’ experience and practice are not the exclusive possession of any group. Thus, the AFSC draws into its work people of many faiths and backgrounds who share the values that animate its life and who bring to it a rich variety of experiences and spiritual insights.” AFSC’s current programs addressing issues of peace, social and economic justice, and war and disaster relief and reconstruction take place in over 40 areas of the United States and more than 20 foreign countries. In addition to the national office in Philadelphia, there are nine regional offices. The Central Region, with its office in Des Moines, administers programs in 11 states. Local, national, and international programs could be grouped into several major areas, including:

    American Friends Service Committee
(AFSC), organization to promote peace and reconciliation through programs of social service and public information, founded by American and Canadian Friends (Quakers) in 1917. In World War I, the AFSC helped conscientious objectors to find work in relief projects and ambulance units as an alternative to military service. In World War II it broadened the scope of alternative-service possibilities to include duty in mental hospitals and other humanitarian work. In peacetime the AFSC continued such national and international programs as community development, racial reconciliation, aid to migrant workers, relief to civilians in war-torn areas, and refugee work. Its program of Voluntary International Service Assignments (VISA) served as a model for the U.S. Peace Corps. In 1947 the AFSC was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace jointly with the Friends Service Council, its British counterpart. The AFSC is financed by contributions from individuals, foundations, and, in some cases, governments of countries where its programs are carried out. Headquarters of the organization are in Philadelphia.

    Who we are
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization that includes people of many faiths who are committed to nonviolence, justice, and service. Our work is based in a belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice. The AFSC was founded in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to serve civilians suffering in the wake of World War I. In 1947, in partnership with the British Friends Service Council, we accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of all Quakers for "silent help from the nameless to the nameless" after World War II. From its beginnings, the AFSC has recognized that the roots of violence and conflict can be found in conditions of alienation, inequality, poverty and oppression. Over the years, our work has expanded to include programs that seek out and address the roots of injustice in our own communities, in our nation and in the world we share. Description:
    Where We Focus
    Peacebuilding
We recognize that lasting peace based in justice must be built, not declared. In partnership with organizations and individuals in local communities and globally, AFSC in Southeastern New England seeks to lay the foundations for a world of hope and peace through education, action, and service.

Socially-oriented systems that take into consideration not only the interests of the larger society but also of the generations to come are gradually coming into focus. Much of this could be attributed to the work of one man, Judge Christopher Weeramantry, a judge and former vice president of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, also known as the World Court. Judge Weeramantry has covered an extraordinary range of issues during his remarkable career. Many of his judgments introduced a new dimension to international law, such as the World Court's advisory opinion on the Illegality of Nuclear Arms, where he declared that the use of nuclear weapons is illegal under any circumstances whatsoever. Weeramantry is also widely respected for having introduced a multi-cultural approach based on the wisdom of the ancients and of various Third World nations.
