Plenary Address: Thursday, October 16, 1:30pm Seeking, and Sometimes Finding the Best in Work and in Life
The term "optimization" means, speaking broadly, finding or creating the best. In computer science and mathematics, optimization is a research area in which we try to understand what characterizes the best as well as how to compute an optimal solution. In life, of course, determining what each of us wants and how to achieve it is much more complicated. This talk will begin with an overview of recent developments in computational optimization (in some of which Richard Tapia has been involved) and then consider a few frequently asked questions about optimizing in life. About the Speaker:
She received her B.S. in Mathematics, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science, from Stanford University. Her research interests include optimization, linear algebra, numerical and scientific computing, and scientific and engineering applications. She is the coauthor of "Practical Optimization" (with Philip Gill and Walter Murray). In recent years she has worked on interior-point methods for nonlinear optimization and on direct search methods for unconstrained optimization. She was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 1997 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001. During 1995-1996 she served as president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). She chairs the Advisory Committee on Advanced Scientific Computing for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, and was a member of the U.S. National Science Foundation Blue Ribbon Panel on Cyberinfrastructure.

The editors of this volume define its goal as 'capturing the universality of life, to transplant it into a different medium and to study its general and logical characteristics'. One can argue that this is the objective of all scientific theory, and the medium could be mathematical equations, analogous natural or mechanical systems, computer programs or still other methods. The participants of the 'Artificial Life' conference dealt exclusively with computer simulations. An overview of the papers presented during the conference and previous meetings since 1987, when the series began, make it clear that most researchers simulate and investigate the dynamics of complex adaptive systems, in which the elements are complex self-organising systems. We tend to think of living systems in this way ( Portugali 1999 ) and the truth is that simulating each specific phenomena at such a level of complexity demands the building of new models. As a result, more models, each simulating specific aspects of life, come into being. The goal of the sixth conference - 'Life and Computation: the Boundaries are Changing', was to go beyond the traditional domain of applications. The papers presented at the conference extend the boundaries of Artificial Life studies to incorporate new models in artificial chemistry, molecular and cell biology, and population genetics. Most interesting for JASSS readers, these models also describe organism development and behaviour, and simulations of human systems - social, economic and linguistic. It is in these areas that I will focus my comments.

The book "Family Time" and associated course books have been a great success in providing a parenting course with study material that is ideal for small groups. Now there is a complete Family Time DVD set and course book available. With a format that includes social time, a video session and small group discussions, this course may well do for parenting what "The Marriage Course" has done for couples.

THE WHITAKERS: BLANFORD B. WHITAKER(5) 1797-1885 Blandford was the first child of Margaret Elizabeth Seaton and Levi Grafton Whitaker, born on November 05, 1796 in Jefferson Co., KY. He married Elizabeth Gathrite on October 09, 1817 in Shelby Co., KY. Their first 5 children were born in Kentucky and the last 3 in Indiana following a move to the Morgan and Owen Counties area in the late 1820s. The family has been there ever since. The line of Blandford and Elizabeth represents the bulk of the known descendants today of Margaret and Levi Whitaker. Elizabeth was about six years older that Blandford and died in 1858 close to 67 years old. Blandford lived until August 29, 1885 and the age of 87.
