Richard Taylor
Company Director, WETA WORKSHOP
Richard established Richard Taylor Effects Ltd fifteen years ago in the back room of the flat with partner Tania Rodger. Richard operated in this manner for several years, providing special effects and puppet work for numerous clients. The company adopted the name Weta in 1994, when it expanded and Richard and Tania joined with Jamie Selrick and Peter Jackson. This meant the company was able to provide a one-stop workshop offering all the effects and requirements for the New Zealand film and television industry. Weta Digital produced all the cutting edge computer effects and compositing for the trilogy of 'The Lord of the Rings'. Weta Workshop took on the design, production and onset operation of all the weapons, armour, creatures and special make-up effects, and the construction of the miniature models. For a company to take on so many departments on a single feature, let alone a trilogy, is almost unheard of.

The Nobel Prize in Physics

Medicine Hat is a small town in Southwestern Alberta founded just over 100 years ago in a valley where the Canadian Pacific Railway crossed the South Saskatchewan River. I was born there on November 2, 1929 and raised in comfortable if somewhat Spartan circumstances. My father was the son of a Northern Irish carpenter and his Scottish wife who homesteaded on the Canadian prairies; my mother was an American, the daughter of Norwegian immigrants to the northern United States who moved to a farm in Alberta shortly after the first World War. During my early years our family of three was part of a large family clan headed by my Scottish grandmother. I attended schools named after English Generals and Royalty - Kitchener, Connaught, Alexandra.
Although I read quite a bit and found mathematics easy, I was not an outstanding student. In high school I did reasonably well in mathematics and science thanks to some talented and dedicated teachers.
I was nearly ten years old when World War II began. That conflict had a great effect on our town, and on me. In rapid succession the town found itself host to an R.A.F. flight training school, a prisoner of war camp and a military research establishment. The wartime glamor of the military, the sudden infusion of groups of sophisticated and highly-educated people, and new cultural opportunities (the first live symphonic music I ever heard was played by German prisoners of war) all transformed our town and widened the horizons of the young people there. I developed an interest in explosives and blew three fingers off my left hand just before hostilities ended in Europe. The atomic bomb that ended the war later that summer made me intensely aware of physicists and physics.

By Richard Taylor
Editor, BBC Click Online
In the final report of Click Online's Africa season, we visit Kenya where a trial project using handheld computers could help reduce the costs of education in poor communities.
Books are a scarce resource in Kenyan primary schools Mbita Point, on the eastern shores of Lake Victoria, hosts a small rural community. A few minutes walk from the main town lies the local primary school, housed on the campus of a renowned research institute. As the only school in the area with access to electricity, Mbita Primary enjoys a relatively privileged location. This aside, it suffers from the same problems encountered by other public schools. 'Willing guinea pigs' Since the Kenyan government introduced free primary school education two years ago, the resulting influx of kids has meant that resources are spread as thinly as ever. In the future the students will be able to complete their assignments on these books and send them to the teacher.

Silver Spurs
A Troop, 3/17th Air Cav
In Passing Memory
Remembering Maj. Zimmerman and Lt. Taylor
by S.C.Jones and John Connor
Have you ever ridden high on adrenaline? Have you ever had a good day come down fast around you on the shear reality of finding out you’ve lost a friend? I bet you know the feeling. Back in January of 1969, I flew in the Lift section of A Troop's "Silver Spurs". I had been in-country for all of two months and riding high on the notion that I was in the best damn outfit in Nam. Didn’t we know it... I’d seen enough action then to know it was no police action the Spurs were involved in. This was war. I had seen my in-country check pilot shot down days after my check ride, my CO shot down in the first week and feared dead, and my buddy from flight school shot down and missing for hours. In that short time I also saw the loss of a few good men. Each took its own toll on my growing awareness of this war, but the death of Maj. Zimmerman and Lt. Taylor brought it all home to me. Over the winter of 68-69 I got to know Lt. Taylor as well as I knew any other man in our outfit. I remember he was dedicated to our mission and took his flying responsibilities very seriously. He was considered by some to be the best scout pilot in our unit. He was an excellent scout with a very good record and was one of the more professional officers. I never had the opportunity to fly with Mr. Taylor, but I did play cards with him on a few occasions. Seems to me he won a fair share of the time. I remember on several occasions he would fold up his cards and beg off another hand because he had an early morning flight to attend to...and that took precedence over any winning hand. If I had been a scout pilot then, I would have patterned myself after Lt. Taylor. I’d have been proud to be like him.
