Otto Stern
Otto Stern was born in Sorau, Upper Silesia, Germany , on February 17, 1888. In 1892 he moved with his parents to Breslau, where he attended high school. He began to study physical chemistry in 1906, receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Breslau in 1912. In the same year he joined Einstein In 1914, he went to the University of Frankfurt am Main as Privatdocent of Theoretical Physics, remaining there until 1921, except for a period of military service. From 1921 to 1922, he was Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Rostock, becoming, in 1923, Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of the laboratory at the University of Hamburg, where he remained until 1933. After resigning from his post at the University of Hamburg in 1933, he became professor of physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and later professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Stern was an outstanding experimental physicist; his contributions included development of the molecular-beam method, discovery of spin quantization (with Walther Gerlach, 1922; see Stern-Gerlach experiment), measurement of atomic magnetic moments, demonstration of the wave nature of atoms and molecules, and discovery of the proton's magnetic moment. He was awarded the 1943

Stern, Otto
Zde zùstal až do svého penzionování v roce 1945.

Nick Lewis: The Blog
Bushwhacking Through the Information Jungle
May 13, 2005 - 5:48pm Over the course of the last month, I've had the unique privilege of making enemies with Otto Z. Stern, a columnist from the UK Register. Stern once noted to his readers , “Your precious letters kept me from the brink of total disaster - that being the moment when I call my mother Greta to hear how superior I am than the rest of you in most ways. Okay, every way.”  How sweet of Otto to let us know how much he appreciates us… Since I’m bored, I’ve decided Otto Z. Stern deserves his own blog post here. Stern is quite an interesting character. According to his blurb at the register , he lives in a solar powered compound in the Great American South West and is the director of “The Institute of Technological Values” - a think tank dedicated to the advancement of morality in our digital age. Of course, that’s all bullshit. Stern actually lives in Chicago, and his institute is nothing more than very funny satirical joke.  Most people are too dense to get it…

Piening Propellers, part of Piening Propulsion Systems, specialises in the design and manufacture of ship's propulsion systems including fixed propellers up to more than 5000mm in diameter, bow thrusters, cross-channelled agitator propellers and controllable pitch propellers. Piening also supplies complete shaft systems with propeller shafts up to a length of more than 12 meters and rudder parts. Piening Propellers are designed according to individual preferences and specifications, using the latest 3-D computer software for hydrodynamics. Committed to a reputation for quality, reliability, flexibility and innovation, the company's special plant in Germany actively meets the challenges of a high tech era. Established in 1928, Otto Piening has over 70 years' experience in the production of ship's propellers their products can be found in many different types of ships worldwide. Luxury yachts that require silent and smooth sailing are powered by Piening Propellers, as are fast speed yachts, rescue boats and patrol boats that are aiming for maximum efficiency. For example, in the case of patrol boats, our hydrodynamic engineers can achieve propeller peripheral speeds of 50m/sec without any difficulty. Piening also offers special services including quick repair in the case of vibration problems. In the course of measurement runs, our engineers will ascertain precisely the causes of vibration and noise and thus facilitate the quickest, low-cost remedy.

Before the Second World War and the Holocaust, Otto Frank had little interest in his Jewish heritage. He was neither proud nor ashamed of being born a Jew; it was a matter of indifference to him. During the Great War, when he was serving in the German army, he made a rare comment in a letter home: "I often get the feeling that mothers, brothers and sisters are the only trustworthy people. At least, that's how it is in Jewish families like ours." His otherwise nonchalant attitude was typical of the German Liberal Jewish bourgeoisie, particularly in Frankfurt where he grew up. He declared that, at the time, "assimilation was very, very strong. Many turned to baptism just to get higher positions. My grandmother never went to synagogue, except once, to be married. And in all her life she never set foot in a synagogue again." Exquisitely dressed, young Otto and his siblings visited a riding school on a regular basis until they were proficient on horseback, called upon neighbors at the correct hour in the afternoon, had private music lessons, and accompanied their parents on outings to the opera, where they had their own box. Edith Oppenheimer, a much younger relative of Otto's who lived in the same area of Frankfurt, recalls, "Otto used to tell me about the wonderful family parties that were held often, some costume balls. There were special parties for children." Michael and Alice Frank were not remote parents by any means; despite the emphasis on manners and comportment, judging from the surviving letters of Otto and his older brother Robert the house on Mertonstrasse rang regularly with laughter, stories, poetry, and singing.
