Steinbeck, John Cannery Row
Genre Novel (196 pp.) Keywords Alcoholism Disability Epidemics Humor and Illness/Disability ... Suicide Summary This novel takes place in the eponymous Cannery Row, a place made up of 'junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses' (1). Although there is a narrative trajectorythe desire of Mack and the other boys living at the Palace Flophouse to throw a party for their friend and benefactor, Docthe plot of this novel is really that plot of land Steinbeck describes so well. Commentary John Steinbeck's novel might initially seem folksy and sentimental, a series of capers (some madcap and some tragic) starring a ragtag bunch of bums, outcasts and social detritus collecting in the slums of Cannery Row. But this would be to ignore the rich vein of bitterness and sadness running through the novel: there are two suicides in the first four chapters and a third described later; Doc is horrifiedwe'd say traumatized nowto discover a corpse under the seaweed when he is searching for octopi; intoxication and mendacity mark the friendships as much as companionship and camaraderie; and Steinbeck's vicious sense of humour snaps at the heels of each chapter.

The impact of the book has been compared to that of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin . Steinbeck's epic about the migration of the Joad family, driven from its bit of land in Oklahoma to California, provoked a wide debate about the hard lot of migrant laborers, and helped to put an agricultural reform into effect." John Steinbeck
Steinbeck (1902-1968) did not start his literary career until Lewis and Fitzgerald had reached their peak. He seemed to be from a different world¡Xthe world of the Great Depression, the world of mass poverty. It was a world as far removed from that of Lewis as from that of Fitzgerald. A Californian, Steinbeck was an athlete and president of his high school class who went to Stanford University in between various jobs. He learned to know the poor, in particular the migrant farm workers, American and Mexican, and he wrote from their point of view. By the middle 1930s, when Lewis and Fitzgerald were past their writing prime, Steinbeck had authored some very popular novels. Tortilla Flat was humorous story about a Mexican-American colony in Monterey, while In Dubious Battle was a serious work about a strike by migrant farmworkers. Of Mice and Men is a touching and perennially popular tale of two migrants and their mutual dependence and shared dreams. Steinbeck portrayed their odd friendship with great sympathy and understanding, and the work has been made into an equally successful play and movie. His greatest success came in 1939 with The Grapes of Wrath . This is the saga of a family of Oklahoma farmers named Joad, who are driven by drought to migrate to California. There they are scornfully called "Okies" and suffer mistreatment and exploitation. Yet somehow Ma Joad always manages to hold the family together. The book leaves the reader with feeling which Steinbeck wanted to instill¡Xthat the poor can endure by helping one another, and perhaps also that they can expect no help from anyone else.

  • Home U.S. People Word Wise ... Homework Center Fact Monster Favorites Reference Desk Encyclopedia Steinbeck, John Steinbeck, John, , American writer, b. Salinas, Calif., studied at Stanford. He is probably best remembered for his strong sociological novel The Grapes of Wrath, Cup of Gold The Pastures of Heaven (1932), and To a God Unknown Tortilla Flat (1935), an affectionate yet realistic novel about the lovable, exotic, Spanish-speaking poor of Monterey, was enthusiastically received. A compassionate understanding of the world's disinherited was to be Steinbeck's hallmark. The novel In Dubious Battle (1936) defends striking migrant agricultural workers in the California fields. In the novella Of Mice and Men The Moon Is Down (1942; later made into a play), about Norwegian resistance to the Nazis. The Grapes of Wrath (1939; Pulitzer Prize), while treating the plight of dispossessed Dust Bowl farmers during the 1930s, presents a universal picture of victims of disaster. Steinbeck's depiction of the westward migration of the Joad family, and their subsequent struggles in the exploitative agricultural industry of California, is realistic and moving, and he endows his humble characters with nobility. Steinbeck's other works are diverse, ranging from the literal account of a voyage, The Sea of Cortez (1941; written with the marine biologist E. F. Ricketts); to a parable

Though receiving an Academy Award nomination in 1944 for best original story for Lifeboat , Steinbeck was never madder at any of his screen adaptations. Alfred Hitchcock and John Steinbeck were a strange choice for collaboration. Hitchcock, the auteur and master of suspense. Steinbeck, the proletarian and realist. Whereas Steinbeck's characters worried if they had food enough to eat, Hitchcock's characters debated about which restaurant to eat at, with one of the considerations being how to avoid being poisoned. Steinbeck's unpublished manuscript for Lifeboat , which you need to make an appointment to read at one of the few Steinbeck research centers in the country, at first glance isn't extremely different than what Hitchcock created on the screen, but it is different enough. Salinas, California had a population of 3,000 when John Steinbeck was born in 1902. Son of a County Treasurer and a schoolteacher, he had roots in the farming community that made many of his stories come alive. Before settling into the exclusive job of writing fiction, he was employed in various jobs, such as painter, laboratory assistant, caretaker, and reporter. His major novels center on a message of warmth and compassion toward the downtrodden. Mr. Steinbeck did what other authors of the time writing social commentary failed to do: comment on the ills of society within the context of the story, rather than having the characters delve into social themes with long-winded speeches or conversations. Mr. Steinbeck gives you an entertaining story and weaves his message in with descriptive genius and makes you sympathetic for the characters' plights as they unfold.

Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck In twelve interrelated stories set in a fertile California valley, John Steinbeck portrays the human failings and frailties, illusions and pretensions that undermine the rich promises of "the pastures of heaven." He moved to New York City in 1925, where he worked briefly as a bricklayer and reporter. Two years later, he returned to California and began his career as a novelist. By the late 1930s, Steinbeck earned both critical recognition and popular success for his populist novels, including Tortilla Flat In Dubious Battle (1936) and Of Mice and Men (1937). His writing used naturalistic language and displayed a powerful social conscience, bringing to life the everyday struggles of the poor in Depression-era America. His most famous novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), followed a displaced Oklahoma farm family which travels to California in desperate search for work.
During World War II, Steinbeck worked as a war correspondent in Italy and Northern Africa for the New York Herald Tribune . After the war, he continued writing novels and did occasional screenwriting for Hollywood. His later work remained popular, especially the novel
