search biblion

Swiss poet, winner of the 1919 Nobel Prize for Literature for his masterpiece, Olympian Spring (final version in 1910). Spitteler evolved his own metrical scheme in the vast and original work in which he "gives shape to the living turmoil of struggling characters that he evokes in order to represent on the level of ideal imagination, human sufferings, hopes, and disillusions, the vicissitudes of different human fortunes in the struggle of the free will against imposed necessity." (from the Nobel presentation) The epic poem depicts the rise of new gods to consciousness and power. In several works Spitteler deals with the antagonism between creativity and the world, exemplified in the character of Prometheus.

Nobel Prize for Literature

Unlike the other awards ( Pulitzer Prize for Fiction Booker Prize ), which relate to one novel, The Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded on the basis of an author's entire body of published work. It began in 1901, after Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel stipulated in his will that a portion of his estate be awarded to "the person who shall have produced in the field of Literature the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency". Famous winners include V. S. Naipaul Jean-Paul Satre George Bernard Shaw (1925), and Rudyard Kipling Quick links: top Year Winner Quote from prize commitee search Sully Prudhomme "in special recognition of his poetic composition, which gives evidence of lofty idealism, artistic perfection and a rare combination of the qualitites of both heart and intellect"

Nobel Prize Fun Facts Alfred Nobel wrote the final draft of his Nobel Prize bequest at the Swedish Club in Paris on a torn piece of paper in front of four witnesses because he distrusted lawyers. The first great author to be rejected by the Nobel Committee Tolstoy was not even nominated in the first year, and 42 Swedish authors, artists, and critics signed a famous address to object to this. Tolstoy was nominated the next year, and he was found wanting by the reigning conservative committee, because of his "animosity toward culture," "ghastly naturalistic descriptions," and "criticism of the state and the Bible."
Another Nobel boo-boo was Antonio Moniz, 1948 winner in medicine and developer of the prefrontal lobotomy for the treatment of schizophrenia. The treatment was abandoned in the 1960’s. Robert E. Lucas, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics in 1997 for his work on the theory of "rational expectations," had to split the $1 million prize with his ex-wife. Her divorce lawyer inserted a clause to cover just such a possibility. The clause in the couple's property settlement read: "Wife shall receive 50 percent of any Nobel Prize."

Sim³n Bolvar was a South American nationalist and general, and one of the greatest heroes of the Latin American wars of independence. He had a dream of uniting all South American, Central American and Caribbean countries and turning them into a single, economically independent country, which he had planned to name Estados Unidos de Latinoam©rica, or The United States of Latin America. Bolivia was named after him, as well as many other places in South America, the national currency of Venezuela, Donald Duck’s dog, and a Canadian-made coffee liqueur, Bolivar Liqueur.
