ROGER WOLCOTT SPERRY (20 August 1913 - 17 April 1994) by Joseph E. Bogen, MD. Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA and Adjunct Professor of Psychology University of California at Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA and Visiting Professor of Biology California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA Send proofs to: Neuroscience Newsletter , Dec 1979): "I know of nobody else who has disposed of cherished ideas of both his doctoral and post-doctoral sponsors [Weiss & Lashley], both at that time the acknowledged leaders in their fields ._._. it is given to few scientists to accomplish radical conceptual conversions in two different fields of inquiry. Perhaps only veterans of my vintage can fully appreciate the profound changes in the neurobiological landscape . . . ." Other evaluations of his work are included in the Sperry memorial issue of Neuropsychologia (Oct. 1998) Proc Nat Acad Sci , Oct. 1963). In V. Hamburger’s presentation of the Gerard Prize in 1979, he stated: "The chemoaffinity theory soon found wide recognition [and] is one of the few important general unifying principles in today’s developmental neurobiology despite the fact that its molecular basis is unknown." The split-brain experiments leading to the Nobel Prize started with the problem of interocular transfer. That is, if one learns with one eye how to solve a problem then, with that eye covered and using the other eye, one already knows how to solve the problem. This is called "interocular transfer of learning." Of course, the learning is not

84. My Developing Understanding Of Roger Wolcott Sperry's Philosophy

My Developing Understanding of Roger Wolcott Sperry's Philosophy JOSEPH E. BOGEN

(Received II February 1995; accepted 17 June 1995)
Abstract Key Words: consciousness, split-brain, epistemics. People interested in Roger Sperry's work have often asked, among other questions: what specifically is the relation alluded to by Sperry (e.g., Sperry, 1969) between the split-brain results and Sperry's view of consciousness as a "holistic systemic property [which is] a dynamic emergent of brain activity" (Sperry, 1992). More often people ask: "How can Sperry maintain that his view is a form of mentalism but not dualism?" (Sperry, 1980). Similarly, "How can he be a mind-brain interactionist and still claim to be a monist?" For some years my responses to these questions had to be, "I don't know-except that there have been many times in the past when Roger turned out to be right." With the passage of time and some further development of my own philosophy, there have come some answers to these questions. Concurrently, with exposition of these answers, I shall indicate rare places where I differ. As might be expected, after forty years oflearning so much from and with him, my beliefs derive substantially from his. Hence, I begin with an attempt to convey my veneration for Roger's scientific ability as well as some feeling for his droll, often oblique and rogatory discourse.

The 100 Most Eminent Psychologists of the 20th Century

Review of General Psychology . 2002, Vol. 6, No. 2, 139–152 Steven J. Haggbloom (Western Kentucky University)
Renee Warnick, Jason E. Warnick, Vinessa K. Jones, Gary L. Yarbrough,
Tenea M. Russell, Chris M. Borecky, Reagan McGahhey, John L. Powell III,
Jamie Beavers, and Emmanuelle Monte (Arkansas State University) A rank-ordered list was constructed that reports the first 99 of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. Eminence was measured by scores on 3 quantitative variables and 3 qualitative variables. The quantitative variables were journal citation frequency, introductory psychology textbook citation frequency, and survey response frequency. The qualitative variables were National Academy of Sciences membership, election as American Psychological Association (APA) president or receipt of the APA Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, and surname used as an eponym. The qualitative variables were quantified and combined with the other 3 quantitative variables to produce a composite score that was then used to construct a rank-ordered list of the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. These results point to two important conclusions. First, that consumers may not completely understand many ads that contain metaphors, particularly those containing abstract metaphors. Second, these results indicate that hemisphere processing has a significant impact on how well metaphors in advertisements are understood. We hope that this study provides knowledge for future research by advertising scholars and by advertising professionals interested in having their metaphors interpreted as intended. Synthesis in evolution: looking back, looking forward The APS Library is a special place for many reasons. For us historians of life sciences it houses manuscript collections central to understanding the synthesis period in American evolutionary studies. In 15 years visiting, I can't think of a time when a box of materials from one of the principals Dobzhansky, Mayr, Wright, Simpson, Dunn, or the like was absent from the Manuscripts Room. Lewis and Clark would envy the attention. As part of a sabbatical fellowship at the Library I've been asked to organize a conference on the synthesis period. (I've drafted Michael Ruse to lend a hand.) Though plans are still taking shape, our aim is to spend two days discussing directions in current and future research on American activity during the synthesis period. We expect to hold this conference in Spring 2004 at the APS Library and hope to direct attention toward several themes:

Sperry, Roger Wolcott (szül. 1913. aug. 20. Hartford, Connecticut, USA – megh. 1994. ápr. 17. Ezután Karl Leshley munkatársa lett elôbb a Harvard Egyetemen, késôbb a floridai Orange Parkban, az emlôsök tanulmányozására létrehívott Yerkes Laboratories of Primate Biology kutatójaként. Sperry 1946-ban visszatért a Chicagói Egyetemre; 1954-ben a Kalifornai Muegyetemen (California Institute of Technology) folytatta pályafutását a pszichobiológia Hixon-professzoraként.
