1928: First Nuclear transfer experiment conducted by Hans Spemann In 1928, German Dr. Hans Spemann performed the first nuclear transfer experiment with salamander embryos , where he transferred the nucleus of a salamander embryonic cell into a cell with no nucleus. Using a strand of hair, he tightened a loop around a newly fertilized egg, until he separated the nucleus and some of the cytoplasm The side with the nucleus divided until it has sixteen cells. Spemann then loosened the loop and let the nucleus from one of the embryonic cells to move over into the cytoplasm of the other side. He tightened the loop even more and separated the cytoplasm with the new nucleus from the other embryo A normal salamander embryo grew from that cell. This experiment proved that the nucleus of an early embryo cell can lead to the growth of a complete organism. Back to timeline Back to main

Ethel Browne, Hans Spemann, and the Discovery of the Organizer Phenomenon
H. M. Lenhoff
Department of Developmental and Cell Biology, University of California, Irvine, California 92717 Ethel Browne Harvey (1885-1965) will be familiar to some as a researcher on the embryology of sea urchins. Few, however, know her as Ethel Browne who, as a graduate student, published, in 1909, a remarkable paper demonstrating for the first time the induction by a transplant of a secondary axis of polarity in the host. This process was later named "organization" by Spemann and Mangold (1924) in a paper that led to Spemann's being awarded the Nobel Prize. Why did the Nobel Committee, or other embryologists for

Biography of Hans Spemann (1869-1941)
  • Hans Spemann was born in Stuttgart on June 27th, 1869. 1904 Professor in W¼rzburg. 1908 Professor in Rostock und Head of the Institute of Zoology, Rostock 1913 Head of the Department for Development and Causal Morphology of the newly founded Kaiser-Willhelm-Institute of Biology in Berlin-Dahlem 1919 Head of the Institute of Zoology, Freiburg 1935 Nobel price for Medicine Hans Spemann died in Freiburg on September 12th, 1941
Hans Spemann studied embyogenesis on the newt embryo by transplantation and by cutting off the circulation to certain tissues. One of his most famous experiments together with H. Mangold was the transplantation of the blastopol lip in a Triturus embryo, wich led to the formation of a second body axsis, like in siamese twins. On vertebrate eyes, he discovered the induction of different Anlagen, for example the induction of the lens from epidermal tissue. For the first time he tried to find causal relations between different events of the embryogenesis. He was the first zoologist to recieve the Nobel price. Created by raetsch

Organizing the Embryo: The Central Nervous System
In the embryonic development of a zygote, gradients of mRNAs and proteins, deposited in the egg by the mother as she formed it, give rise to cells of diverse fates despite their identical genomes. For a discussion of the evidence that leads to this important conclusion, examine Embryonic Development: Getting Started But is the embryo fully patterned in the fertilized egg? It is difficult to imagine that the relatively simple gradients in the egg could account for all the complex migration and differentiation of cells during embryonic development. And, in fact, the answer is no. However, once these gradients have sent certain cells along a particular path of gene expression, the stage is set for those cells to begin influencing nearby cells to become increasingly diversified. In other words,
  • cell-intrinsic signals (established between a nucleus and the particular cytoplasmic environment that cleavage has placed it in) lay the foundation for
  • cell-cell interactions to further guide the cells of the embryo to assume their proper position in the embryo and to differentiate into their final specialized form and function.

Bibliographic Essays: Life Sciences in the Twentieth Century, by Garland E. Allen, Page 3 EXPERIMENTAL EMBRYOLOGY By the late nineteenth century various biologists began to seek ways of incorporating more experimental methods and causal explanation into what had been basically a descriptive science. This trend was initially most prominent in embryology (developmental biology, in today's terms), but it soon spread to other fields such as heredity, evolution, and, ultimately, ecology, and animal behavior. A useful collection of contemporary reviews papers discussing the state of embryological and morphological work in the 1890s comes from the Marine Biological Laboratory's famous Friday evening lecture series (1889-1899). Selected papers from this series have been reprinted with commentary by Jane Maienschein as Defining Biology: Lectures from the 1890s (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard Univ. Press, 1986). This collection provides easy access to some authoritative but not overly technical primary source material that could easily be assigned to undergraduate students.

Hans Spemann
Hans Spemann 27. Juni in Stuttgart 9.
