Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Frederick Soddy The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1921 Frederick Soddy, the son of Benjamin Soddy, a London merchant, was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England, on September 2, 1877. He was educated at Eastbourne College and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. In 1895 he obtained a scholarship at Merton College, Oxford, from which University he graduated in 1898 with first class honors in chemistry. After two years of research at Oxford he went to Canada and from 1900 to 1902 was Demonstrator in the Chemistry Department of McGill University, Montreal. Here he worked with Professor Sir Ernest Rutherford on problems of radioactivity. They also investigated the gaseous emanation of radium. Leaving Canada, Soddy then worked with Sir William Ramsay at University College, London where he continued the study of radium emanation. Here, Soddy and Ramsay were able to demonstrate, by spectroscopic means, that the elements helium was produced in the radioactive decay of a sample of radium bromide and that helium was evolved in the decay of emanation. He was awarded the Albert Medal in 1951. He was recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1921 "for his contributions to our knowledge of the chemistry of radioactive substances, and his investigations into the origin and nature of isotopes".

Field Study Awards for Schools
The Frederick Soddy Trust, with the support of the GA, has launched its annual Award Scheme for schools.
The Frederick Soddy Trust was established in 1957 under the terms set out in the will of the chemist and Nobel Laureate, Professor Soddy FRS. The Trust provides modest support for expeditions and fieldwork which include the 'study of the whole life of an area with major emphasis on the human community'.
Following the success of previous years' Award Schemes, the Trust wishes to continue to encourage pupils' interest in field study by providing financial support. Schools often find it difficult to compete successfully for funds from the main grant making bodies or to allocate their own financial resources to field studies. The Trust hopes to encourage field studies by providing support specifically for such work.

"The whole profit of the issuance of money has provided the capital of
the great banking business as it exists today. Starting with nothing
whatever of their own, they have got the whole world into their debt
irredeemably, by a trick.
This money comes into existence every time the banks 'lend' and
disappears every time the debt is repaid to them. So that if industry
tries to repay, the money of the nation disappears. This is what makes
prosperity so 'dangerous' as it destroys money just when it is most
needed and precipitates a slump.
There is nothing left now for us but to get ever deeper and deeper into debt to the banking system in order to provide the increasing amounts of money the nation requires for its expansion and growth. An honest money system is the only alternative."

Tax Reader comments about this quote: Robert , Sarasota Just in case some of you folks didn't get it the banks do not 'lend' money they issue 'credit' BIG difference. When we go to the bank to borrow $100,000, the $100,000 springs into existence as soon as we promise to pay it back. And when it is paid back it disappears into the void from which it came. The problem is that interest is charged a LOT of interest, sometimes double or triple the original 'credit'. But if ALL money is created this way, then there is no way for everyone to pay back their debts because the interest comes out of the principal. The only way to pay back is to borrow more! (and more, and more, and more) Whoever gets stuck, loses their property and bankruptcies are guaranteed. It is done over and over and over and over. Just think of how many homes and businesses are mortgaged? MOST! It is a stinking business, and a crime against humanity.

Soddy, Frederick (1877-1956)
20th Century Born: Eastbourne (Great Britain), 1877
Died: Brighton (Great Britain), 1956 Soddy studied chemistry in Oxford and graduated in 1898. He worked under Rutherford. Soddy studied the different consecutive radioactive breakdowns beginning with uranium and thorium. In the process of disintegration some fourty to fifty different elements were detected. Soddy suggested that different elements were capable of occupying the same place in the periodic table. In 1913 he called these elements isotopes. Furthermore he could explain all radioactive intermediates and that lead was the final stable element. For these results Soddy was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1921. He was professor of chemistry in Oxford from 1919-1936.

Frederick Soddy Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1921 A Talk by Professor M. A. Whitehead It is interesting that contrary personalities often associate to produce stimulating and sometimes brilliant joint works. Gilbert and Sullivan, Watson and Crick, Hartree and Fock, Kohn and Sham are examples. Frederick Soddy and Ernest Rutherford were so dissimilar in background, training, education and personality that it is a wonder that they ever worked together, let alone that their joint work was to yield the theory of radioactivity and the structure of the atom. Both were Scientists Supreme, both searchers after Truth both dedicated to understanding and using Research for the Common Good. Yet while Rutherford was Knighted and buried in Westminster Abbey, Soddy who was also interested in Education was ignored by the Establishment, attacked by other Scientists and died in obscurity. The Why and Wherefore of this will be discussed and another side Soddy's character unveiled such as Soddy’s generosity to all who knew him.

Soddy's Formula
Back to Mathwords
Soddy's formula is another example of giving the credit to the wrong person. The formula is about the relationship of the radii of four mutually tangent circles. The formula is sometimes called the "Kissing Circles Theorem". If four circles are all tangent to each other, then they must intersect at six distinct points. In 1643 Rene Descartes sent a letter to Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia in which he showed that the four radii, r , r , r , r , must be such that . The figure shows four circles all externally tangent to each other. The figure could also be drawn with three tangent circles all inside, and tangent to, a fourth circle. The bend of this externally tangent circle is given a negative value, and thus the same equation provides its radius also. The equation can be written much more easily, and usually is, using a notation of "bend". For each value let the "bend" equal the reciprocal of the radius, then 1/r = b . With this notation the formula can be written as Descartes Circle Theorem was rediscovered in 1842 by an amateur English Mathematician named Phillip Beecroft. Beecroft also observed that there exist four other circles that would each be mutually tangent at the same four points. These circles would have tangents perpendicular to the original circles tangents at each point of intersection.
