Frederick Soddy , the son of Benjamin Soddy, a London merchant, was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England, on September 2, 1877. He was educated at Eastbourne College and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.
In 1895 he obtained a scholarship at Merton College, Oxford, from which University he graduated in 1898 with first class honours in chemistry. After two years of research at Oxford he went to Canada and from 1900 to 1902 was Demonstrator in the Chemistry Department of McGill University, Montreal. Here he worked with Professor Sir Ernest Rutherford on problems of radioactivity. Together they published a series of papers on radioactivity and concluded that it was a phenomenon involving atomic disintegration with the formation of new kinds of matter. They also investigated the gaseous emanation of radium.
Leaving Canada, Soddy then worked with

Intra-atomic Charge.
Nature , 399-400 (December 4, 1913) That the intra-atomic charge of an element is determined by its place in the periodic table rather than by its atomic weight, as concluded by A. van der Broek ( NATURE, November 27, p. 372 ), is strongly supported by the recent generalisation as to the radio-elements Fajans, in his paper on the periodic law generalisation ( Physikal. Zeitsch. Chem. News , February 28), I laid stress on the absolute identity of chemical properties of different elements occupying the same place in the periodic table. A simple deduction from this view supplied me with a means of testing the correctness of Fajans's conclusion that radio-changes and chemical changes are concerned with the same region of atomic structure. On my view his conclusion would involve nothing else than that, for example, uranium in its tetravalent uranous compounds must be chemically identical with and non-separable from thorium compounds. For uranium X , formed from uranium I ionium formed in the same way from uranium II There is a strong resemblance in chemical character between uranous and thorium salts, and I asked Mr. Fleck to examine whether they could be separated by chemical methods when mixed, the uranium being kept unchanged throughout in the uranous or tetravalent condition. Mr. Fleck will publish the experiments separately, and I am indebted to him for the result that the two classes of compounds can readily be separated by fractionation methods.

from Chemical Society Annual Reports In the last section of the 1910 Report, "Chemical Relationships of the Radio-elements ," the existence of groups of radio-elements possessing identical chemical properties was shown to foreshadow "some embracing generalisation which will throw light, not only on radioactive processes, but on the elements in general and the Periodic Law." In 1911 the first step in this direction was made, when it was recognised that the expulsion of the a -particle causes the radio-element to change its position in the periodic table, not into the next family, but into the next but one in the direction of diminishing group number and diminishing atomic mass. Last year doubtful points in the sequence of changes, consequent upon the branching of the disintegration series at the C -members, and on the existence, in uranium, of two chemically identical elements, uranium- I and - II , were cleared up, and the important step made that the B C -members of the three series exhibit identical electrochemical behaviour. In the meantime, a systematic study of the chemical nature of those disintegration products not hitherto thoroughly studied from a chemical point of view had resulted in a remarkable extension of the feature which dominates the chemistry of the radio-elements.

He worked under Lord Rutherford at McGill Univ. and with Sir William Ramsay at the Univ. of London. After serving (1910–14) as lecturer in physical chemistry and radioactivity at the Univ. of Glasgow, he was professor of chemistry at the Univ. of Aberdeen (1914–19) and at Oxford (1919–36). He was especially noted for his research in radioactivity. With others he discovered a relationship between radioactive elements and the parent compound, which led to his theory of isotopes; for this work he won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His scientific books have become classics and include The Interpretation of Radium (1909, rev. ed. 1922)

Frederick Soddy September 2 September 22 ) was an English radiochemist Soddy was born in Eastbourne, England, and studied at University College of Wales at Aberystwyth and Oxford University Merton College ). He was a researcher at Oxford from to In he became a demonstrator in chemistry at McGill University in Montreal Quebec Canada , where he worked with Ernest Rutherford on radioactivity . He and Rutherford realized that the anomalous behavior of radioactive elements was due to the fact that they decayed into other elements. This decay also produced alpha beta , and gamma radiation In , with Sir William Ramsay , Soddy verified that the decay of radium produced helium From to , he was a lecturer at the University of Glasgow and while there he showed that uranium decays to radium . It was here also that he showed that a radioactive element may have more than one atomic weight though the chemical properties are identical; this led to the concept of an isotope . Soddy later showed that non-radioactive elements also could have multiple isotopes. In addition he showed that an atom moves lower in atomic number by two places on alpha emission, higher by one place on beta emission. This was a fundamental step toward understanding the relationships among families of radioactive elements.
