Nobel Prize for Physics in 1924 for his discoveries and investigations in X-ray spectroscopy. Siegbahn was educated at the University of Lund and obtained his doctorate there in 1911. At Lund he became a research assistant to Johannes Rydberg and succeeded Rydberg as professor of physics in 1920. In 1916 Siegbahn discovered a new group of wavelengths, the M series, in X-ray emission spectra. He developed equipment and techniques that allowed him and subsequent researchers to determine accurately the wavelengths of X rays. A year after he became professor of physics at Uppsala University, he and his colleagues furnished proof (1924) that X rays are refracted (bent) when they pass through prisms, just as light rays are, though the effect is weaker and obscured by absorption of the X rays. Later, Siegbahn also investigated the weaker X rays that lie near the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. In 1937 Siegbahn became professor of physics at the University of Stockholm. In the same year the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences created the Nobel Institute of Physics at Stockholm and appointed Siegbahn its director; he retired from that position in 1975. He served as a member of the International Committee on Weights and Measures from 1939 until 1964. His son, , also became a physicist and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1981.

n. X-ray spectrometry.
Wikipedia
X-ray spectroscopy In modern X-ray emission spectroscopy X-rays are used to excite a material of interest. Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn from Uppsala Sweden Nobel Prize 1924), who painstakingly produced numerous diamond-ruled glass diffraction gratings for his spectrometers, was one of the pioneers in developing X-ray emission spectroscopy (also called X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy ). He measured the X-ray wavelengths of many elements to high precision, using high-energy electrons as excitation source. Intense and wavelength-tunable X-rays are now typically generated in so-called synchrotron radiation laboratories. In a material, the X-rays may suffer an energy loss compared to the incoming beam. This energy loss of the re-emerging beam reflects an internal excitation of the atomic system, an X-ray analogue to the well-known Raman spectroscopy that is widely used in the optical region.

Siegbahn, Karl Manne Georg Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn was born on the 3rd of December, 1886, at Orebro in Sweden. His father was Nils Reinhold Georg Siegbahn, a stationmaster of the State Railways, and his mother was Emma Sofia Mathilda Zetterberg.
After receiving a high-school education he entered the University of Lund in 1906, where he obtained his doctor's degree, in 1911, on the thesis "Magnetische Feldmessung". From 1907 to 1911 he served as Assistant to Professor J. R. Rydberg in the Physics Institute of the University, afterwards he was appointed lecturer and (in 1915) Deputy Professor of Physics. On the death of Rydberg, he was appointed Professor (1920). In 1923 he became Professor of Physics at the University of Uppsala. In 1937 came his appointment as Research Professor of Experimental Physics, at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. When the Physics Department of the Nobel Institute of the Academy came into being, that same year, Siegbahn was made its first Director.
Siegbahn's early work (1908-1912) was concerned with problems of electricity and magnetism.
