El Premio Nobel de Literatura es uno de los 5 premios espec­ficamente se±alados en el testamento del millonario escandinavo Alfred Nobel . Segºn sus palabras, el premio debe entregarse cada a±o "a quien haya producido en el campo de la literatura la obra m¡s destacada, en la direcci³n correcta" . La instituci³n encargada de seleccionar al ganador es la Academia Sueca (en sueco Svenska Akademien Diez de los 100 autores galardonados con el premio en el siglo XX fueron de habla hispana: los espa±oles Jos© Echegaray y Eizaguirre (1904), Jacinto Benavente (1922), Juan Ram³n Jim©nez (1956), Vicente Aleixandre (1977), y Camilo Jos© Cela (1989); los chilenos Gabriela Mistral (1945) y Pablo Neruda (1971); el guatemalteco Miguel Angel Asturias (1967); el colombiano Gabriel Garc­a M¡rquez (1982) y el mexicano Octavio Paz (1990).
